Space Savers are only really rated to a max of 60mph and are only to get you home, but you do see numpty's going much faster and seem to have them on there for weeks... TBH it's becoming rare to see a new care with a spare... Manufactures are now just giving you a can of tyre sealant and pump. The problem with this stuff is that it wrecks the tyre.... My old man has an new-ish Volvo S80 and that's all they gave him.

My Crown Victoria came with a full-size spare.

You know what I have no idea what size spare I have in my car, but then its a city car so the wheels are tiny any way...

Yea, the speed he was taking roundabouts was most concerning, because of the pressure being applied whilst changing direction fairly rapidly. It's the same pressure over a much smaller surface area. Turned off and took a slightly different route from this guy ASAP! [edit] Guess it's some cost-cutting thing, but when it comes to safety, that's very worrying. My 12yo Saxo (now departed) had a full spare, and my 15 month Vauxhall Astra (Opel in Europe, Saturn in US I believe) also has a full spare under the boot. [/edit]

Whereas my 30 month old Astra has no spare whatsoever (it is the VXR, so the wheel/tyre size may be a factor).

Java, Basic, who cares - it's all a bunch of tree-hugging hippy cr*p

Speaking of which, we came down a most serpentine pass this morning that had a visible layer of oil all over it from the constant train of ore trucks going up and down it.  Rain had lifted the oil and the back of our pick-up was dangerously light. :~  There were signs of several recent accident just over a few km.

You don't have a can of sealant spary some where then? As that's what they may supply now...

Mines the SXi 115 (I can't get insured on anything bigger due to age :) ), but it's the 5-door version not SportHatch so I presume mine has a bigger boot too. Very nice btw the VXR, seen a few around here.

Yes, I do, but as I said - no spare :-) It's actually not too bad, as the compressor they supply as part of the kit is pretty powerful and I use that a damn sight more than I'd use a spare (although having said that, I had a puncture (two screws in a tire) about two weeks ago...

I'm old enough to faintly remember when that was the case for me :-) Although the Astra was actually cheaper to insure than my last car (a Honda Civic Type-R), despite having 20% more power and 60% more torque. Go figure! My Astra does have a well for a spare - as I said, I suspect it's the size (18" wheels, 225mm rubber) that makes a spare prohibitive.

I was happy that this managed to get up hills without being forced to change down  I'd like something in the range of a VXR/Civic Type-R/Golf R32 in the long run, I'm not much of a BMW/Merc/Audi person, I like hot hatches :) Mine'll do me well though for a few years when I'm over 25 and full no claims and when the missus can pass her test and get her own car :/

Did the spray trash your tyre? I tell you what's worth putting in is Ultra Seal... I used to use this in my Bike tyres, I was surprised the size of hole it would plug... Basically I was going home rounding a corner at about 65mph, as I was straightening up I heard a bang. Thought I'd picked up a puncture but the bike didn't give the usual signs of a flat... Got home and there was pink goo everywhere and a hole the size of my thumb in the rear tyre and the offending object actually inside the air space. But the ultra seal kept the tyre up until I got home..

Didn't use it. Pumped the tyre up, the puncture was slow enough that I could drive on it. I was hoping for a proper puncture repair (I've had that done before on a previous, pretty high performance car), but as there were two punctures, I couldn't find anyone willing to do the repair, so replacement it had to be :-(

Another problem with tyre sealant is that it's seriously dangerous. Several people have died trying to repair a broken rim using a welder, not knowing that the tyre is full of air/butane mixture.

Not sure but it's probably one of those compact spare tires. Had a flat a week ago and found out my car has the same thing. I can tell you they are not safe. (and your not supposed to do more than 80Km/h , 50M/h with them). Had my tires replaced as fast as possible.

Yup, my old Fiat had a spacesaver spare wheel - it was about 2/3rds the width of a regular wheel, and had the same restrictions. It also had a bright red hubcap - presumably to make it easy to spot if someone's driving on one. I certainly notice them all the time on people zooming past me on the motorway

Between 02 and 06 GM went the other way. My mom's Impala has a 50mph/50 mile donut. My lacrosse has a 65mph/3500 mile donut. The only obvious difference between them is that mine's a 65PSI model while hers is lower; IIRC 35.

I'd say the bigger problem is that it only works on punctures. IF your tire starts to come apart you're up a creek with just a can of fix a flat.

That's the case when they are used on the vehicle for which they were designed. Putting one on a 1/2-ton van or truck would be overly obvious.
