Anyone who is not aware of AIDS, after all the unwarranted fanfare and noise that has been made about it, is a very lucky person. I'd bet a large amount that there is no-one on this board who has not or will not lose a relative or close friend to cancer. And that relative or close friend will suffer hugely, before dying, but receive none of the handouts or support that AIDS sufferers receive. It is a crime that money people give for medical research is handed out to people who do not do any research, especially when there are organisations researching diseases and illnesses that are crying out for resources. And why is AIDS so popular? Because a few perverts in the entertainments industry died from AIDS, that's why, and all their perverted little friends in ents make loud noises about it -- and the world's fallen for it.

Perhaps because HIV is transmissible but preventable and spreading awareness has the potential to reduce the number of those infected. There is always the chance that a breakthrough will cure other major diseases, but AIDS is easer to solve, merely by not contracting it. I'm not going to say that any illness should be viewed as more important than another, but I will say that there are reasons to be aware of some rather than others. Being aware of all of them would be ideal, but focusing on one can really produce benefits that would not be achieved when resources are divided.

Why AIDS? Why not cancer? Why not Parkinsons? Why not cerebral palsy? Why not any of the other dreadful diseases that strike people down, even though they've led good, productive, wholesome lives? Why not give a little support to one of those, so that their sufferers can receive a tiny fraction of the succor and comfort that is lavished hand-over-fist on AIDS sufferers?

No worry, I am taking care of these - Folding@Home[^] is running.

Personally, I love the idea that Raymond spends his nights posting bad regexs to mailing lists under the pseudonym of Jane Smith. He'd be like a super hero, only more nerdy and less useful. [Trevel]

I work in ents, so several "acquaintances" have died of it. The way they behaved and lived their lives, I wasn't surprised. How many other people here can say they have personally known several people who have died of ADIS? Precious few, I'll warrant, because most of us don't mix with the sort that is the prime candidate for it in the West. Now, as I said before, how many people here have lost loved ones through cancer -- and, indeed, how many of us will it kill? Give respect, love, and money to help people who do not kill themselves through promiscuity and "incautious" behaviour -- those who continually dance on the edge of a cliff are bound to fall off, some time. The cure is not to dance there, and refusing the cure should not be rewarded. God bless Freddie Mercury, and may he rest in peace -- but he sought, and he found.

The flower girl at my wedding, all of 13 years old died from AIDS...given to her by her father through birth...due to a blood transfusion. He did NOT do anything through promiscuity or "incautious" behavior, but was the victim of a medical mistake. My wife took care of that little girl for the last couple years of her life (medical care at her house). So her dad got to see her pass, just like he was there when his wife also passed. Sorry, I have no liking for homophobic morons.

There's a (6???) month delay between initial infection and when you will test positive, and while the pre donor screenings include questions intended to filter anyone in the false negative catory out, the risk from a transfusion/organ donation is still no zero. And at the risk of fighting dirty, you're not really saying that anyone who was raped by an HIV positive person is responsible for the rape are you?

Ha! The typical knee-jerk reaction of someone who cannot stand that people have opinions different from his own. You try to prove you're a saint, with your pretty story, and then you accuse someone whom you know absolutely nothing about of being a moron and "homophobic" (whatever the Hell that's supposed to mean; I'm not afraid of anyone). Are you new to the Internet? When will you start on about the leader of the Third Reich?

You're assuming that the only way you can catch HIV is promiscuity. That's simply not the case. What about all the inncoent kids in Africa who have HIV, through no fault of their own - are you going to abandon them, too? That's just heartless.

Talk about knee-JERK reactions... I never said anything about being a Saint or trying to prove such nonsense, and my "pretty story" though true, obviously wouldn't have any effect on a coldhearted, head in the sand individual like yourself. You complain about AIDS awareness day. There only 2 months out of the entire year (12 months for you) that there's no Cancer awareness days or activities... Have your opionion, no matter how blind and homophobic it is.

So now I'm a jerk, cold-hearted, head-in-the-sand, blind, and homophobic? You'd fit right in on CompuServe. But what really amazes me is that you found this:

offensive enough to quote in in your original reply, and somehow derived from it that I have no feelings for little girls who are senselessly killed through no fault of their own. Go on! Say the "H" word!

You're assuming that the only way you can catch HIV is promiscuity. That's simply not the case. What about all the inncoent kids in Africa who have HIV, through no fault of their own - are you going to abandon them, too? That's just heartless.

I assume nothing of the kind, and wrote nothing that that could possibly have been inferred from. Why is it that people seem to intentionally misread perfectly readable statements? The only possible answer is a knee-jerk: "He doesn't fall to his knees and worship whatever I like, or fall for the same BS that I fall for, so he must be evil!" Get just a little bit real. eh?
