Interesting that you think the Spanish are Yanks! :)

Casa Grande was the name given by Spaniards to some large Amerindian ruins nearby. When the town was founded, they gave it the name of the famous, nearby ruins.

Using a bland literal translation of a spanish name looks pretty ueber yank to me.

Personally, I love the idea that Raymond spends his nights posting bad regexs to mailing lists under the pseudonym of Jane Smith. He'd be like a super hero, only more nerdy and less useful. [Trevel]

Actually that part of the US was part of Mexico before we grabbed it. I believe the name for the ruins predates the US.

I'm not sure that dying in pursuit of your sport is a darwin achievement otherwise we'd see people like Ayrton Senna with awards. From what I hear the guy was at the top of his game and something went seriously wrong on this jump.

Yeah, I remember that. The US army tried to prevent Texas from separating, and somehow found itself in Mexico City. Still, at least for a european ear, "Casa Grande" has some ring, whereas Big House doesn't (Though it means, literally, Big House. A great house would be Gran Casa.)

If one's sport is spectacularly stupid, it qualifies. Jumping off cell towers, especially in the vicinity of high voltage power lines, belongs in that category in my book.

I'm sure that when "Worst sporting moments" get hold of the carnage vid and play it with a really patronising voice over that's the way it will seem. I'm also sure that people like him actually live their lives far more than the people who will sit and watch this kind of "train crash" tv. Many people dream of BASE jumping but comparatively few have the dedication or skill to put in the training to go to the edge, in most cases these guys aren't just rolling the dice and seeing what comes up. They are adventurers in the spirit of the old days, judging the risks of what they do and minimising them to the greatest extent possible but in the end accepting that life doesn't always have to be served in ten minute chunks with 3 minutes in between for the messages from our sponsors and can sometimes include some risk.

Well, actually Texas didn't try to separate; it had already been an independent Republic, having won independence from Mexico in 1836 and later joining the US in 1845.
