Can anybody recommend project management software that we can host on a server ourselves? Preferably asp.net/sql server, be able to assign tasks, in which a task has to go through several defineable steps. It may cost some money, but nothing enterprise level. A couple of years ago I used @task, which was nice, but nowadays you have talk to a sales rep to get a quote, which I refuse to do (don't know what was wrong with the clearly presented low prices they had before). EDIT: note that this is intended for administrative work, so not for software development projects. Thanks for the suggestions so far!

Have you looked at FogBugz[^]? AFAIK, v7 has a plugin that lets you customize the workflow.

I've had good success using Axosoft OnTime: Axosoft OnTime[^] Heard about them at a .Net Users Group meeting and the price is reasonable.

I'll second OnTime - it's pretty good at what it does, although it took some time to get used to it - there's lots of tutorials online too , which helps.

I'm currently using Gemini [http://www.countersoft.com/home.aspx[^] ASP.NET with SQL DB, and free 5 user license. Yes it's geared around software projects, but I've found it useful for task tracking, workflow and time management for other projects too, as it's highly customisable.

www.aceproject.com is excellent, and they even offer the entire source code for a very reasonable price. You can go online and use the fully functional demo account. I highly recommend this, it even tracks timesheets, or hours spent per task. Very intuitive, and includes many reports. Pricing is very low. (No, I am not a salesman!)

Jira is a issue tracking tool that also handles task (and sub-task). It is highly customizable including workflow, and has a plugin called Greenhopper designed for agile software development project management - but could be used for other project management as well. The Greenhopper plugin is nice you can prioritize tasks individually, not just in bulk groups like Critical, Major, Minor, etc. I just installed in last week, so I'm not an expert on it, but I'm happy with it so far. And if you have 10 or fewer users it is only $10 right now. Reasonably priced beyond that - depending on what you mean by enterprise pricing.

A fair amount of privacy sensitive data is involved, so it has to be hosted on the intranet. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Wout, I think you will find the pricing to be insanely low, and the feature set to be much more than you need. As for the basic PM type stuff, it covers all those bases quite nicely. We liked it so much, we purchased the Source code to the site, which was somewhere around 2,000 dollars USD. This gave us the ability to remove what we did not like, and extend what we did like. It gave us more security, and put the final answer to the question of how we handle PM. Hosting our own, also gave us more flexibility on server storage, and document repositories. (Which we integrated with MS Share Point). A full blown hosted solution for unlimited (everything) is only about $100 a month, a real bargain. (You cant host your own this cheaply). The site has a "Try it out" fully featured demo, that you should spend some time digging into. Its much deeper than meets the eye, and I would be surprised if it does not meet your needs. Glad to be of help, and glad to see someone other than me liking it!

Hi, you can try Pacific Timesheet software. We use it for IT project time tracking, and it is easy to use and competitively priced, I believe. If you go to their web site (www.pacifictimesheet.com) you can check the price on the Buy page, I think.
