a different type of programming contests

Hello. I would very much appreaciate your help on the following topic. Does anyone know of programming contests that don't check for prerequisite background in algorithms/programming and mathematics, and is still used to identify good programmers? thanks. abidaal
Google code jam[^] doesn't have any prerequisite background requirements, but that said, it is generally algorithmic/maths based. Most programmers should at least be able to have a good stab at most of the qualifying round questions though even without any maths background. TopCoder[^] has a range of contests including components, design, algorithms, even testing and bug fixing I think.

Sure. There's whole heap of them at the ACU Conference[^] every April. Usually in the bar, after a long and enlightening day of brain wrenching fun. We use social dynamics* to determine the skills of contestants along with their debating skills on the merits of subjects as diverse as Vi vs Emacs and how best to get a session approved for next year's conference amongst all of the luminaries competing. * i.e. did they buy us a beer, and is it something interesting? My particular favourite was of course the tabs v spaces boat race. Spaces won this year, but the battle continues next April.

You put four programmers in a room with a computer and a bikini model. The one who asks the bikini model to step aside so he can get to the computer is the best.

Am I not the best then? :(( :((

I think you may want to check the VB contests page on the web.

I think I wouldn't mind not being the best ;P

One voted? Someone doesn't like your jokes Nagy! (+5 I thought it was quite funny!)

No worries. It was probably a salesman in here by mistake.

Not even a programming contest, and significance is debatable.[^] Still, interesting - at least seeing some hard science (well, harder than the next gurus gut feelings, anyway).
Personally, I love the idea that Raymond spends his nights posting bad regexs to mailing lists under the pseudonym of Jane Smith. He'd be like a super hero, only more nerdy and less useful. [Trevel]

this one seems interesting. but still they refer to thinkgs like some specific knoweldge in programming languages etc.
Err, they specifically assume no prior knowledge beyond secondary schools maths [age 11-16].

A background in math and algorithms is required to be a good programmer. Without it you are destined to be just a competent programmer at best. That knowledge is a real eye-opener. Besides, programming contests that don't require algorithms and math are usually trivial. ... Have you considered Middle School? Logo for Learners (That actually requires algorithms)

By definition the female programmer will win, then. ;P

yes. but now I see that still those students have done some programming in the past will manage this better than the novices..
What do you want to figure out actually? I expect someone calling himself a programmer to have some understanding of algorithms and math.
