You guys won’t believe this! Some dirty mofing spammers used *my* home machine to send spam. I got curious after I found a lot of suspicious modem activity when I wasn’t doing anything on the net. A netstat revealed dozens of SMTP connections and a further inspection of my mail queue revealed the startling and horrible truth. I had stupidly enabled relaying on my SMTP at home. Now I’ve set it to accept only localhost connections! But what I don’t understand is how they managed to get my IP. It’s not even a static IP, it keeps changing every few days! These spamming bastards must be traced and destroyed!!! And my already slow net connection was being used to send out dozens of spam mails in the last few days! Nish [in a very pissed off mood] :mad:

Hi Nish, Not good at all. They are indeed the lowest of the low. I run a hardware firewall here and it amazes (or at least used to) me the number of hits it gets. You gotto lock everything up tight. Neville Franks, Author of ED for Windows. www.getsoft.com

It's pretty easy to scan entire blocks of IPs for computers with vulnerabilities or open services. I'm guessing that's how they found your computer with SMTP.

Worst of all, now your IP is listed and banned on each and every anti-spam list on the net. If you start using your SMTP server for real some day, your e-mails will be rejected from about every big ISP... :(( It happened to me. I totally agree with you, we aren't agressive enough with spammers. About the IP scanning, I have an dynamically allocated IP, changing every day. To protect a little bit my ADSL connection, I run a soft-firewall (a nice freeware, Outpost[^]). Generally, I begin to be attacked 5 to 10 minutes after initializing the internet connection, and received an average of 30 agressive connection attempts or port scans every hour. Influence of the Evil, Influence of the Good, which of both will go further? Wobbly destinies, dubious dreams, which of both is good for nothing? L'emprise du Mal, l'emprise du Bien, lequel des deux ira l'plus loin? Destins bancals, rêves incertains, lequel des deux est bon à rien? Come On Boys/Ludwig Von 88

I've just read this thread with a rapidly sinking heart. This could go a long way to explaining why I've twice recently had several Mb of nothing going out on the line; and Daniel's message could also go a long way to explaining why my outgoing mail (configured to use my SMTP rather than my email provider's) has been struggling to contact Hotmail addresses lately. Awwwwwwwwww CRUD! Thanks Nish, at least now I know how to stop it happening again. Paul Why don't you take a good look at yourself and describe what you see - Led Zeppelin, Misty Mountain Hop
