When did the switch to X x 1080 go into affect? I was at Best Buy the other day trying to get my dad a new monitor and there wasn't a single monitor with a vertical resolution higher than 1080. Granted the prices were *cheap* but when I buy a 24" monitor I'm expecting 1920x1200 as a bare minimum. Since pops is getting old his vision is getting worse so he likes to run windows at 150% font size. On a lower resolution monitor that causes most web pages to have a horizontal scrollbar. We finally settled on 140% due to his monitor only having x800 vert. res.

It is a problem. Hell a lot of the monitors on Newegg are now x1080. Is this some sort of take advantage of the ignorant consumer that just wants to hear 1080p thing? I managed to find a suitable 1920x1200 that I wanted but still... wtf.

I was recently on a pricing exercise for a new Monitor and was very dismayed to see that, here in the UK at least, many of the cheaper models had a vertical resolution of 1050. Now is that weird, or what?

1680x1050 is quite common for resolutions below 1920x1200

Yes, I'm in favor of having someone to monitor resolutions. So far I have broken every resolution I made for this year. Now that I got that out of the way, I can live the rest of the year in peace.

Maybe the designers of the monitor were having a bad day

Wider is cheaper because the total area is less for a given diagonal length.

Pathetic. For new years '99 I resolved to give up making any further new years resolutions. Stuck by it for 11 years now without the help of a monitor.

But that's OK, because web designers say so. It's your dad who's at fault -- he shouldn't be allowed use a web browser unless his eyes meet the specifications that web devs say they should.

There I would have to reach forward my head about 1 foot 30 cm away from the screen to be able to read the darn small texts when coding :sigh: Edit: Oh, and my new monitor is a 26" at 1920x1200 resolution (all the 27" are 1920x1080) that has a dot-pitch of nearly 0,3 mm, it just hasn't arrived yet because it was out of stock.

My relatively inexpensive (when I bought it) Dell 24" has 1920x1200. 1080 would definitely be too low for vertical res. Btw people still shop at Bestbuy? :omg:

I think it is down to economics of production of LCD panels - 1080 vert is 1080p for TV's - using it for monitors means they can produce the same panels for TVs and monitors and enjoy the economies of scale - I agree it isn't great for a monitor but hell they are cheap now aren't they.

I use 1920x1200 on my 17" dell laptop screen. That size and a small font are good for seeing two pages side by side when programming. I just bought a 1920x1200 28" Hannspree monitor from Costco for $299. It is FANTASTIC and priced great. PLUS - it is also a HD TV. Get One !

0x12 Hexadecimal (Base 16) is 18 in the decimal system (Base 10). It's an attempt at humour.
