There I would have to reach forward my head about 1 foot 30 cm away from the screen to be able to read the darn small texts when coding :sigh: Edit: Oh, and my new monitor is a 26" at 1920x1200 resolution (all the 27" are 1920x1080) that has a dot-pitch of nearly 0,3 mm, it just hasn't arrived yet because it was out of stock.

I think it is down to economics of production of LCD panels - 1080 vert is 1080p for TV's - using it for monitors means they can produce the same panels for TVs and monitors and enjoy the economies of scale - I agree it isn't great for a monitor but hell they are cheap now aren't they.

My 'new' Dell D630 laptop tops out at an oddball 1280x800 - when we loaded W7 on it, the OS popped up and said "Many applications may not display properly at this resolution". WTF? Jim

I use 1920x1200 on my 17" dell laptop screen. That size and a small font are good for seeing two pages side by side when programming. I just bought a 1920x1200 28" Hannspree monitor from Costco for $299. It is FANTASTIC and priced great. PLUS - it is also a HD TV. Get One !

Changing the font size causes havoc with all kinds of apps, not just wep pages. Better to get a larger monitor with larger pixels. Also switch him to Opera or some other browser with true canvas magnification (not just font size changing, like IE does). That's what I found myself doing until I had my cataracts fixed (now reading the small text is no problem again). You might also consider that he has beginning stages of cataracts. They are not just about cloudy vision and blindness. They cause the eye's lens to have spots of higher and lower density. This causes a moasic focus effect -- different parts of the image are in focus at different distances. There's no distance where everything will be in focus. It is most noticable with the small text on the flat surface of a computer monitor. Just something to consider.. maybe read up on the symptoms and, if it sounds like what he's experiencing, have his eyes checked.

That's a nice chart! I think that anything in 16:10 (8:5) is the nicest looking. My 24" monitor is 1920x1200 while my tiny laptop is 1280x800.

In my opinion it's a symptom of the growing use of computer monitors to view video content, and (my opinion only) idiots who just can't stand letter boxing of video. Full HD is 1920 x 1080 (16:9), to watch that full screen on a 1920 x 1200 (16:10) monitor you get black bars on the top and bottom. I discovered months ago when I was searching for a new monitor myself that it's very hard to find a large format monitor that's not 1080 lines, or some other version of a 16:9 aspect ratio. I managed to find a 23" Samsung (2343bwx) that while still 16:9, at least it's 2048 x 1152 so I get enough vertical space to make it convenient. The manufacturers probably save money (make more profit) and use it as a marketing tool (Full HD!) while the average consumer doesn't realize they're actually getting less and meanwhile pissing off those of us who still use computer monitors for.. gasp...computing!

I just purchased a 21.5" monitor and I'm LOVING the x1080!! Even if it could go higher, I'm still good on the 1080! Why am I so good on the 1080? Because it replaced a 15" CRT running at 1024x768!! It's like I was living under a rock for years and now I've seen the light, even if the light is only at x1080!

I think that's a standard native resolution for the older 720P flat screen TV's. Our old Olevia TV had a similar resolution. Of course it was like 37".
