What will Apple iSlate Have
-
There has been too many speculations on Apple Tablet PC. This is my take on that. Apple has a reputation of emerging from the average by using mature technologies which is available otherwise to everyone and differentiate in the user experience. For example 1. IPod had no new features than an MP3 player cannot have but it was cool and it was a phenomenon 2. IPhone, any new feature ? well touch screen was there but not utilized in that way ever, apart from that everything else was there Now comes the Tablet Microsoft has a Tablet for almost 5 years now, they have got everything but success. Amazon Kindle eReader is a reading device which does not utilize the technology to the full but earns by limiting them, you don't have USB port to transfer to and from your device. Now, what will apple tablet have that will differentiate them from these two giants. They will utilize the Tablet multi touch screen interface Second, a major functionality missing from Kindle is eWriter which everyone is ignoring, Microsoft Tablet has got that in a medicore way, thats where Apple will excel first. An eWriter with excellent touch, draw and write capability, if you think of it these functionality are already mature and available in any tablet. Third eReader, where Kindle retricts and limits user by going against technology, Apple will utilize technology to the full, Wifi, usb, blue tooth, a device completely independent of the service, but can be used to download ebooks from an Apple service Thats how Apple will do, beating Microsoft tablet and Amazon Kindle by producing a great touch screen eWriter and a boundless eReader. Lets see.

Probably nothing that the MS Slate released earlier this week doesn't have, but had no hype at all (probably because it lacks a certain fruit), at twice the price running a bastardised version of iPhoneOS and OSX mixed.

(your choice of Namaste, Namaskaram, or Vannakum) Sri Rama, I hope Apple really does "re-define" the market in some interesting ways in its tablet design ! I'm no Apple fanboy, either; I think their policy and attitudes towards developers has sucked for years, and, with the advent of the iPhone, became absolutely obnoxious. Here in northern Thailand US $800 would be about 26,000 baht : that would cover : 1. two months of rent for a two bedroom house with walled gardens, teakwood floors (12,000 baht) 2. two months of electricity and internet (3,000 baht) 3. two months of health club membership in a four-star hotel health club (1800 baht) 4. fresh laundry service from neighbors (washed, ironed) twice a week for two months (2000 baht) 5. two months supply of fresh-made soy-milk (120 liters [consumed at 2 liters per day] : 2200 baht) The remaining baht, about US $160, would cover well ... for two months ... delicious fresh Thai vegetarian food every day from the local market, one tank of gas for rare use of a car (use the bicycle most of the time), and other miscellaneous expenses, some second hand books, perhaps one minor doctor's visit, etc. Of course all the above does not include automobile maintenance, bicycle repair if needed, major medical treatment, etc. And it would certainly not cover those diversions for which Thailand is notorious which I have no interest in, anyway. Thinking in those terms : for me, US $800 is quite expensive : it's two months of a "millionaire's life style" :) best, Bill

Everything you say is true. What you don't mention is the flurry of activity of other vendors who will take Apple's idea and "go to town". They will greatly improve the functionality of the multi touch screen interface, vastly improve the touch, draw and write capability, add to the utilization of the WiFi, USB, BlueTooth and generally make a device that will outshine Apple in every way. Apple will then ignore the field and make their users put up with their innovation for several years, despite the aggressive innovations spawned by Apple. They will succeed in this because Apple users have been led to believe that if they buy the outrageously priced hardware coming from Apple that they actually gain something (besides having to define why they paid the price to begin with). They will complain directly to Apple and Apple will judiciously ignore them, marching to the tune of their own drummer. Yet Apple users will allow Apple to continue on this path simply because they have the Apple logo. When the field of devices becomes huge (with Apple leading the charge) we will find that only Apple has the same interface as previous models and the market for third party addons is counted in the millions. This will then spawn a flurry of innovations directed only to the Apple device, after all why create a third party hardware device with an interface for Samsung, a different interface for HP, a different interface for Dell (who will have an interface totally unknown to the modern world, but that's a totally different story), etc. etc. After a few years of success and consumer choices counted in the hundreds, Microsoft will suddenly announce a new technology which will be nothing more than modification of a device already on the market with features from three years prior, will not run until at least service pack 2, and predict that their device will outsell everyone else. It will take Microsoft several years to figure out that they were wrong. In the meantime, the consumer will be the one that wins. They will have their choice of devices that meet their needs and will purchase devices accordingly. Some will stick with Apple (see previous paragraph) simply because it is built by Apple. Some will choose different devices because they offer better functionality and can be repaired cheaper. Some will become zealots regarding why their (fill in device name here) is better than Apple, but in the long run it will always be compared to Apple. Yet Apple will remain a niche player, always the innovator but never the one to

It does not really matter how crappy the ISlab is for one major reason - IMarketing will still be able to pawn it off to IFanboys at an IInsanelyHighPrice. As for as I care, Apples marketing team is the only reason half there stuff sells at all. And seriously, why bring the Kindle into this discussion at all. It is an eReader. If they wanted to add in eWriter functionality it would no longer be only for eBooks.

What will it have? Fanboys willing to stoke the religion and overlook any flaws while ignoring the fact that similar devices have been out for years. The iWhatever will simply be "better". It will take something boring, wrap it in a coating of chic, whack a high price tag on it, and have it integrate seamlessly with all the other chic, sleek toys unwrapped from their silken boxes. It will be the same old same old, presented with a refreshing UI and a form factor that is a joy to hold. And so it goes.

All true but it will out sell the "competition" and the HPs, Dells, Sonys, etc... of the world will try to imitate it and still fail. And so it goes.

Do you have a Iphone or a Ipod?... you should try to buy a computer from apple and compare with your regular PC.

Its very wrong to make this implicit comparison. The biggest goal for Apple is not the computational features (USB, Wifi, HD Size, Screens - Windows Computers aways beat Apple on that stuffs), but how that are assembled. You cannot compare this products, its like compare a Bowers & Wilkins speaker and a regular JVC. Of course, both can produce 150W but the sound quality is different (probably JVC gonna have 2500W, and still sucks). This question is a speculative so its a loose of time. You gave your opinion, now i can give mine: If you don't like the Apple products, don't buy.... This tablet will rock for who enjoy apple products, but MS fans will still continue saying things like "But Microsoft's Tablet have USB 2.0 and 432432GHz and 41432143 RAM". The Apple customers don't care about this anymore, we know that "we buy. It works", just that. Best Regards PS: In 3 years my Apple computer never crashed... no blue screens or any other "unexpected behaviors"... working every day, all day long. How many times your computer have crashed this week?? Think about.
malpeli wrote:

Exactly zero times. This is an old, false cliche. If you don't fuck up your computer, it won't crash. In fact, I can't remember my computer crashing in the last couple of years where it was not the fault of broken hardware or crappy software instead of Windows' fault. I won't say much about Apple or Microsoft being great or not. There are a ton of fanboys on both sides, so it's a futile discussion anyway. Just that:

I don't know what stores you talk about, but when I buy a Windows machine, I know that it works, too. In most cases, it's the user that is to blame for bluescreens and crashes, not the operating system.

I f*** my mac several times, im a developer too... my unix core is changed every day. Even that, he dont crash.

Thats why the deal with apple machines is the "full construct computer", works like a charm... smooth hardware and software integration.

I started using macs (20 years ago), back to Windows (15 years ago) and back to mac (3 years ago) ... i have Ubuntu (that i love), Windows 7, and MacOs installed in my macbook pro. On my day long i use a Desktop PC with windows XP. Man, im not a fan boy.... but i can tell you... that Windows PCs sucks. Windows degrade with use, its a phenomenon. hahah But ok, good luck with your question post. PS: "Its the users fault" its a Homer's Simpson phrase. For me as a developer: Its aways my fault.

I get your points but I don't understand why you're bringing the Kindle into the picture. It was built to read books and that is what it does.
Because Apple is busy loading tons and tons of textbooks into iTunes and possibly working other e-book/e-magazine/e-newspaper distribution deals through iTunes in preparation for the tablet release. Buy one iSlate and download all your college textbooks cheaply and it pays for itself the first year or two, plus you can download a John Grisham novel or subscribe to the NY Times and Newsweek on the tablet... and get iTunes/LaLa streaming content, maybe Netflix streaming, plus of course Hulu, and Google Apps in the cloud, with permanent cell network usage and/or wifi... :)
