Fastest USB Thumb drive ?

Has anyone got any decent performance data upon which to base comparisons? I'd like a 16GB drive to use for short-term backup - right now my various C***** and K***** units apparently perform miserably. Any recommendations - pref. based on numbers welcomed. Windows 7 x86. Incidentally HD_Speed (no affiliation) shows a 10x increase in performance if the drive in question is plugged directly into a USB2 port rather than living at the end of a USB extender cable .... I did some measurements on memory sticks I had around: Measured on Dell Inspiron 1720 (2.4GHz Vista) with HD_Speed old Sony 256MB reads 5.3MB/s SanDisk Cruzer Micro 512MB reads 7.3MB/s Sony Cruzer 1GB reads 12MB/sec old Medion 256MB reads 12MB/sec Philips 4GB reads 13MB/sec Sony Cruzer 16GB reads 22MB/sec Kingston DataTraveler 4GB reads 25MB/sec 2. Newer models seem to be (bigger and) faster. 3. IMO large manufacturers (such as Sony) have several lines, with at least one of them aimed at performance; which gets reflected in price. 4. beware Emtec; they have a bad reliability reputation around here. :)

I only read code that is properly formatted, adding PRE tags is the easiest way to obtain that.

Yup, Sony is expensive when you compare the price to others. Could be these drives last longer?

We use OCZ Rally2 devices and can recommend them. I'm waiting for the 256GB version, myself though. SSD capacities are getting there, slowly... :rolleyes:

Looking forward to the day When Microsoft produce a truly portable OS on a USB, I cant see this being a far off.

Who cares really? You'll probably end up replacing it with a faster and bigger model about the time it conks out. I still have a 128 MB device and NEVER use it. The only reason my wife hasn't made me throw it out is because she probably has no idea what it is :)

With USB 3.0 around the corner, I'm waiting to buy a high capacity thumb drive. And there's always eSata; wonder if anyone will figure out how to make a thumb-like drive for that.
