Wow. What exactly are you getting as attachments to fill it that frequently? After 5(?) years my personal account is at 9% full; and my mailing list eater (never deleted a thing) has worked its way up to 79%.

Had my account for 6 years, only 3% full!

For really large videos I use file-sending services. But for smaller videos and photos, they prefer email. Since everyone has gmail these days, mailbox space is not much of an issue (6-8 GB for everyone I think).

*ahem[^]* And if you're constantly filling yours up sending them, shouldn't theirs be filling up receiving them just as fast?

Considering the usual workflow, no. E-mail is darn convenient. Though ish should be able to automate that...

Personally, I love the idea that Raymond spends his nights posting bad regexs to mailing lists under the pseudonym of Jane Smith. He'd be like a super hero, only more nerdy and less useful. [Trevel]

Not sure if my cousin does that, but mom and sis delete mails after downloading the videos. I should do that too (after sending the mails) but I usually wait for confirmation that they got all the mails and by then I forget to delete the mails. I think it may be a more practical approach to send 2-3 DVDs by snail mail every couple of months. That way I can send it in full resolution and need not waste my time cutting small 2-3 minute clips out for easier downloading.

          Regards, Nish

Mine is 33% full mostly from the 20 or so mailing lists I subscribe to. I too never delete non spam emails.

You are currently using 2499 MB (33%) of your 7414 MB.

However I do email myself .7z files containing my current source code for each project I work on from time to time. These are generally less than 300K containing only C++ source a few icons.

My gmail mailbox frequently runs out of space (gets to 99%) and I have to go delete mails with large attachments. Since gmail won't let you sort by mail size, here's a tip for those of who who email videos as attachments. Search for "mimetype:video" and you'll get a result set of emails with video attachments. In my case every month I send videos of our toddler son to my family, so that explains why I run out of space so fast. Note you can search by any other mime type, example : mimetype:image.

The other option assuming your family members have decent bandwidth would just be to join the crowd of people plonking family videos on youtube.

They don't have great bandwidth yet, but I suppose they can watch Youtube videos (with some patience). But my wife's not that comfortable with putting personal videos online. And I don't really know if Youtube supports private password protected video sharing. On a side note, you are a problem-solver type, aren't you? :-) I mean that in a good way. In general I've noticed how you like to figure out various solutions to problems (kinda like Hans D, except Hans restricts it to technical stuff - your scope seems to be wider).

Have you consider uploading them to Picasa Web Albums? http://picasaweb.google.com Picasa: Use the downloadable Picasa software to upload videos up to 1 GB in size. I upload short videos that are taken from my camera to Picasa Web Albums. And every one back home can watch it with no problems.

Noted. Back when I was on dialup I'd start buffering a 20 or 50meg video at the beginning of an online session and watch it an hour or three later when it finished downloading; it worked reasonably well if I was mostly browsing light weight forums or reading over NNTP, but patiaence was a definite requirement and I hated of streaming video since I couldn't easily rewatch it the next day.

I'm not aware of anything like that. I've just ran across what were obviously family videos from time to time when searching for other stuff. I won't argue with Simtha (hope I'm spelling it right), or anyone else over privacy concerns. eg I refuse to have anything to do with facebook over a combination of it's bad record with privacy and a statement by their CEO calling it an obsolete concept.

Yup. I like to be at least on step away from work when relaxing; so I rarely look at code people need help with any longer.

It's Smitha[^]. It's easy to remember her spelling if you think of it as Smith followed by an 'a'. Interestingly, a friend's daughter used to call her Simtha a few years back (the kid was 2 years old at the time).
