Year of the tablet? Pad?

I wonder if in six months everyone will refer to any tablet computer as an ipad as they did with mp3 players and the ipod came out. They surely will say over the next year or so that Apple started the tablet technology :) Wonder whent he iSlate will come out.. I can hardly image the how many more millions of apps will flood the app store now!

I don't think so. WHen the iPod and iPhone came out, both either made the experience much nicer (the iPod) or greatly improved on the existing device (the iPhone), both with the UI and the hardware (in the case of the iPhone). The iPad, as I understand it at the moment, doesn't do this. It doesn't bring much new, and it seems squarely targeted at plain old consumption of digital content, which the iPod and iPhone do just fine. To me the interesting next step was to be a device that really took a stab at delivering a device for content creation, a solid revamp of the UI for a notebook, into something resembling the elegance of a notepad and pencil.

The ipod really did nothign new compared to what was currently on the market. In fact, there were several mp3 players that had more features than the ipod and cost less, but the Apple marketing stole the show as it usually does. Microsoft should buy them :)

It's not about "features" per se, it's about ease of use. And this is where the iPod tended to win hands down, at least for a lot of people, myself included.

Right. Buy Apple and remove 100% of the creativity. M$ can't change their marketing spots.

The only thing that could have been a killer feature (I hate that expression) is the ability to shift power consumption when using the iBook application (to have a big battery lifespan) when using the iPad as a kindle replacement. Other than that, probably not for me, but who know!

Chances are it's powering the screen that takes most of the battery anyway, so even if there was something like that it might not make that much of a difference in the end.

usability is a feature, and a big one; in the iPod case, it was the main feature (other than the Apple fame) that won the market for them.

That thing looks hideous. It doesn't seem to do anything an iPhone can't do. FAIL. IMO.

Almost certainly. N270 netbooks spend roughly half their power on the screen; and one of the reasons (besides cost) that IPS panels aren't used in normal laptops is that they inherently consume more power (IPS needs two transistors/pixel vs one for competing technologies). The ARM cpu probably consumes no more than a watt, two at most, of power which means the vast majority will be going into the screen. I'm also curious about what the real world battery life will be; the standard laptop makers tricks of idle at desktop, wifi off, screen at minimum brightness are already looking fairly blatant with netbooks. The iPad is going to be even more sensitive to this because of it's lower overall power. Personally I don't expect it to sell that well. It's too big to be portable (the 10" kindle DX has suffered badly due to this). At 1.5 lbs it's about as heavy as a hardback book which means holding it to watch for an extended period of time is going to be inconvenient. The combination of it's higher price and the limitations of an LCD screen mean it's not a viable threat to eInk readers even ignoring the bulk/weight problem. To really be useful it needs a next generation screen; either one of the eInk killers (color, fast enough for video, negligible to zero idle power draw) or maybe OLED (not sure exactly how much power savings this really offers). Once one of these technologies becomes available in sufficient volume/low enough price i could see a v2/3 successor taking off; but evne Apple will be hard pressed to run the hype machine up to epic levels on the successor to a dud.

iPod sales didn't start all that great and the product would have failed had it not been for its killer app--the Apple Music store. What surprises me today is that you can go to Walmart or Best Buy and get a really good MP3 player for under $50. Yet, right next to them are iPods and Zunes with the same feature set for four times as much.

That was my first response. I actually thought the photographs were a joke from the Onion or another spoof site.

Heard a good one on the radio this morning. Caller says that IPad sounds like a type of tampon. (Not as absorbent, but definitely a different market.)
