I like my coffee, I really do, sadly or rather not so, I changed jobs recently and the new place offers free machine coffee (rather than a kitchen in the last place). Issue - the blasted whitener is made from corn syrup and I'm diabetic. I really don't want to go on a blind aimless rage because the people here are actually really nice, especially immediate boss who tried her best to get it changed over. Response from HR was "we are not required to provide these facilities and there are alternate sources available" which, while the whole message was generally snippy, I can sort of understand (alternate sources being the canteen so, paying for it). Unfortunately the canteen is a bit extortionate so I'm on sugarfree Red Bull which is giving me the pickup for less but can anyone recommend anything else? (Yes, i've tried black coffee too but the powder cakes the tubing apparently because without eating anything else, my levels have gone up 2 mmol within the space of a morning)

At my last job, I had a nap room. That worked rather nicely for keeping me alert (except for when I was napping).

Actually as diabetes is a medical condition and this could cause you major health problems you will find that they are legally obliged to supply you with an alternative otherwise they would be in breach of discrimination laws.

This seems to me like it might be discriminatory, and the response is appalling given the fact this sort of thing can effect your health. Perhaps you can arrage to get hot water from the canteen, especially if this isn't outsourced.

NOOO! Tell me it isn't true - coffee is bad for you? Oh well, it can go in the list: Butter Salt Sugar Red meat Chicken Eggs Alcohol Tobacco Dope and now Coffee. Let's just add Air to the list and be done with it, eh? Why is it that everything you enjoy doing, eating, or drinking will be declared bad for you by someone? And why is it generally someone who either doesn't do it, eat it or drink it, or who doesn't want us to know they do it, eat it, or drink it? Gotta go - I need some more caffeine... Mmmmm!

I suppose you're right. I always choose (expresso) coffee without sugar, but there's a bit of sugar, I can taste it. :)

If they are supplying to people who are not diabetic, then they must supply for those who are, else there is a discrimination and that would be illegal. Alternatively they could just not supply coffee to anyone, that way there is no discrimination.

Sadly that was the general tone of the email we got back from HR. There are apparently other diabetics in the building and they haven't complained. I'm thinking that that's because they aren't actually aware of it, I only narrowed it down because I was wondering why I was spiking so much so cut out the variables til I found the right one. Debugging the morning routine so to speak. Actually most of the department was pretty shocked at it and were outraged that there was nothing to indicate that the whitener was so high in sugar, we stole the bag off the guy who was refilling it to check out the ingredients. Currently we're trying other things like seeing if we can get a small fridge for milk because there is a pure hot water machine so that plus tea would be ok.

It is though, it causes aging in biological organisms, oxidization in metal and fermentation in breweries. Wait that last one's not so bad.

I bought a mug from Robert Dyas that has a plunger in the style of a french press I think it cost about a fiver. Instead of drinking Americano at £1.30 from the work canteen I buy Java Taste the difference coffee from the supermarket at 2 for £4 for a saving of £100 a month.

Why so? I was using the beer making definition: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brewing#Fermenting[^] "After the wort is cooled and aerated — usually with sterile air — yeast is added to it, and it begins to ferment."

I'm not sure why the mix is aerated - possibly so that the yeast a means of survival other than fermentation as fermentation is not hugely efficient. Fermentation is an anaerobic process though, creating alcohol and co2 without the use of oxygen (there are other fermentation processes too such as lactic fermentation as seen in Sauerkraut)
