On The Job Front

I talked to one of the guys that used to work with me at the WPF job, and two of the other four programmers quit. It seems they're reducing benefits and such in a cost-cutting move, and have gotten no new customers since I was laid off back in October. It's too bad, really. The code they were working on was kinda cool, and the app was pretty impressive.

Although the British stopped using the past participle gotten about three hundred years ago, the American colonists and their descendants--especially in New England--still tend to use it. Some English teachers have tried to ban its usage to make American English conform to British English, especially during the nineteenth and early twentieth century when there was a movement to purify English. Others are just not used to its use because it is not used in their region and hear it as an error. Ultimately, language is convention. If you are writing for a formal audience outside of New England, you might want to use the simple past form got instead. It is like the dictum to never end a sentence with a preposition because that is something some people just will not put--ummm--up with which some people just will not put! Yes. For example: "Since I last saw you, you have gotten big!" Gotten is correct, and very old. In England many people wrongly assume that gotten is a modern Americanism, but the truth is the English more-or-less stopped using it, and have forgotten (!) that they used to use it. And you forgot to add that American's use it (and do a lot of other things) to rub the Brits noses in that little dust-up in in 1812...

I don't and I'm british! It's a relic from when English was inflected, the Americans kept it (as did the people in the area where I'm from). "Gotten" just flows in a sentence much better than "got".

One of the problems with working on some new stuff is that you never know when the project gets scrapped (when the management decides its not feasible). If you are in VB maintenance with a few clients involved, in all likelihood, work continues. :sigh:

Do you have any experience with WinCE or XP embedded? I know a guy in Houston who is running a small shop that seems to always need someone every now and again for that kind of work.

When you spend all those hours and it actually turns out decent, it is sad to see it sit and rot. I am amazed you have such a time finding stable work with your obvious talent in the field, I would think there would be plenty of contract work knocking on your door, using more cutting edge technologies (and C# not VB).

So are out of work right now? You are in Houston right? Do you have any experience with WinCE or XP embedded? I know a guy in Houston who is running a small shop that seems to always need someone every now and again for that kind of work.

Yeah, I hate working on something you actually like to do, but have issues finding the market for them. When you spend all those hours and it actually turns out decent, it is sad to see it sit and rot. I've been unemployed since October also, although I have only recently started seriously looking for a new position, and I'm being picky. Unlike you, however, I am only interested in contract work. The last thing I want is a full time permanent position. My wife's salary pays all of our bills and we get all our benefits through her job, so I'm in a perfect position to just do contract work.
Chaining ourselves to the moral high ground does not make us good guys. Aside from making us easy targets, it merely makes us idiotic prisoners of our own self loathing.

Looks like you and I are in the same boat. I've been unemployed since October also, although I have only recently started seriously looking for a new position, and I'm being picky. That is more or less how I got started on my own except rather than being laid off I managed to build up a little pipeline of work while I was away on leave and decided not to return. It was really bittersweet because the employer I left at the time was easily the most ethical, honest and reasonable people I've ever worked for.
