Both MBs have built in video. System is: MB, CPU, RAM, DVD player, HD, monitor. There is nothing there that is not required. It is dying in the file copy part of install, about 8-10% done (based on the ASCII mode progress bar being shown). It says it can not find a file on the source CD. If I tell it to skip file, it repeats for the next file, not copying any more after that point.

Well if it says it can't find a file thats where the problem lies... Perhaps it's a damaged install CD? Faulty DVD drive?
I know you believe you understood what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize what you heard is not what I meant.

No he means the Anti virus in the BIOS, some of them protect the Master Boot Record etc.

Yeah, I just can't think of a mechanism that would have it die on the same file for all MB/CPU/RAM/HD/install CD variations I have tried. The DVD is not even spinning fast when it dies, and it flat stops once it stops copying, so I don't see how the PS could do it. Oh. Crap. Maybe the DVD player is hosed. That had not even occurred to me until now.

You may have just bought a new Motherboard when the old one was working ;P

That just means I need to get a new small case/PS & small HD and I have a skype server for my wife. There is no such thing as too many computers. :)

I came across something similar recently, xxxx.sys file is missing and the install stops. Turned out I had the wrong copy of the XP setup CD (different serial code)- so the only option was to reformat and install from scratch. I probably missed it but are trying to repair the os installation ? In my case the Novell Network client had corrupted, eventually forcing me to semi-manually re-install TCP networking services (couldn't find the original setup CD and the CD writer - for backup - was not working) Got it connected, backed up user data to the desktop, and did a complete re-install.

I have seen drives that have a messed up stepper motor that works just fine until you get to the bad part of the stepper and then it just stays there...I don't know if it is still true but I recall that some older drives used an optical mechanism for stepping and if there were problems with the marks on the glass it would get very confused.

My wife's PC started crapping out to the point where I decided to slick it, freezing on boot It kept dying during the file copy phase of XP install. I have seen this before when ram went bad. I swapped out ram, and it died same place. Then the OS hard drive (thank God) got crapped up and windows install spent 3 hours checking it. I went to the back up HD, and it is dying at the same place (file copy in install). I got a new MB, CPU and RAM, and it is still dying at the same place. I tried a different copy of XP, still dying in the same place. ------------- So, should I buy penny stocks? ------------- Sorry, wrong thread. The only thing left is Power Supply and Monitor. I am going to try it on my PC's PS, and see how it works. Does anyone have any ideas about what could be causing this? If so, please let me know. Thanks in advance RM

Us older fogies remember the days when almost all "unexpected" problems were caused by either the video card or the sound card. You can't run the machine without the video card, but you can probably pop out the sound card and try the install without it -- it could well be the first "Windows sound" played that's slamming you against the wall.

I have seen this several times - the installer loses the connection to the cd/dvd for no apparent reason. My solution has been to boot a live CD OS, Format the target System HD, copy the MS installation files to a subdirectory, and install from there. Hope it helps.
