Just got my gas bill after submitting a meter reading. Apparently I owe them £467.15 for the winter period. I know it was cold, I know the wife left the heating on most days but £467??? They'll be getting a stern call from me this evening. Bastards.

I got an estimated gas bill for £374 a couple of weeks ago. I was similarly furious until I checked the meter and found it should have been £412... Ouch!

Why? You knew the cost before hand. You knew your wife left the heat on most days. Sounds more like you're pissed at yourself and the wife and want to take it out on the gas company. BTW, during winter here in New York, I can easily spend 300USD a month on heating, and that's being very frugal. Marc

When we went home to Budapest we found that the boiler had gone tts-up. After we got the boiler fixed - unerds of poonds - we wacked the heating up to get some sort of warmth - about 18-20 C - into the flat. As a guestimate we burnt about £200 of gas in three days...

Yes and no. That pretty much doubles the bill and we used it similarly last year and the bill was only about (from memory) £250. Wholesale prices and the prices to the customer are supposed to be falling, not rising (in the UK). I'm happy to leave it on if it's needed (which it was) but this bill seems far higher than it shoudl be given the usage. Don't worry, though, I have my credit card at the ready: I know I'll have to cave in and pay or the only gas we'll have is, well, you get the picture. ps NY is much colder than here. I have a friend who lives just outside NY who delights in sending me pictures of the snow and then taking the piss out of our measly 1 inch that seesm to bring the whole country to a grinding halt.

My heating bill for this winter, in New York City, was almost zero... Quad-core desktop + Big screen TV + Good quality windows = No need for a heater, unless it drops below 0F outside. Actually I've been opening the windows a little now and then, to cool the place down. Now... Summer on the other hand... My air conditioner pretty much has to run for four months straight...

It's a nice place to visit (Which I do, about twice a year - Parents are near Sarasota), but I wouldn't want to live there... You guys have no terrain. It's too flat. Import some mountains, or at least hills...

I live in Newfoundland where it can get quite cold in winter (though only -2C today), and heating costs are usually substantial. I took the plunge and went with a geothermal installation in our new home. Well worth it. One month heating for us now, in a 3700 sq ft home, is about $130 CAD in winter.

Ok suppose the gas price is the same as here, you would have used approximately €516 worth of gas which is 846 cubic meters of gas at €0.61 per cubic meter. I don't believe you could have used that much..

Just had cavity wall and extra lagging, still the gas bills 'go through the roof'.

Stayed in Sarasota (somewhere near St. Armands Circle) last year but prefer Naples. Always have to find a Kilwin's or ColdStone Creamery. Mmm.

Southwest flys pretty much everywhere I want to go for $90 bucks each way.

Ok suppose the gas price is the same as here, you would have used approximately €516 worth of gas which is 846 cubic meters of gas at €0.61 per cubic meter. I don't believe you could have used that much..

Neither do I. Still don't think I'll get too far: I'll need to check and make sure I didn't misread the meter before I call them and also take a good look at previous bills but I'll either have to pay or go without I suppose. Just had a quick look: 680 units since September.

You sure you don't have a gas leak? Any gas fires in the house?
