Why? You knew the cost before hand. You knew your wife left the heat on most days. Sounds more like you're pissed at yourself and the wife and want to take it out on the gas company. BTW, during winter here in New York, I can easily spend 300USD a month on heating, and that's being very frugal. Marc

How many open windows do you typically have? :)

My heating bill for this winter, in New York City, was almost zero... Quad-core desktop + Big screen TV + Good quality windows = No need for a heater, unless it drops below 0F outside. Actually I've been opening the windows a little now and then, to cool the place down. Now... Summer on the other hand... My air conditioner pretty much has to run for four months straight...

It's a nice place to visit (Which I do, about twice a year - Parents are near Sarasota), but I wouldn't want to live there... You guys have no terrain. It's too flat. Import some mountains, or at least hills...

Just got my gas bill after submitting a meter reading. Apparently I owe them £467.15 for the winter period. I know it was cold, I know the wife left the heating on most days but £467??? They'll be getting a stern call from me this evening. Bastards.

I live in Newfoundland where it can get quite cold in winter (though only -2C today), and heating costs are usually substantial. I took the plunge and went with a geothermal installation in our new home. Well worth it. One month heating for us now, in a 3700 sq ft home, is about $130 CAD in winter.

Ok suppose the gas price is the same as here, you would have used approximately €516 worth of gas which is 846 cubic meters of gas at €0.61 per cubic meter. I don't believe you could have used that much..

Just had cavity wall and extra lagging, still the gas bills 'go through the roof'.

Yes and no. That pretty much doubles the bill and we used it similarly last year and the bill was only about (from memory) £250. Wholesale prices and the prices to the customer are supposed to be falling, not rising (in the UK). I'm happy to leave it on if it's needed (which it was) but this bill seems far higher than it shoudl be given the usage. Don't worry, though, I have my credit card at the ready: I know I'll have to cave in and pay or the only gas we'll have is, well, you get the picture. ps NY is much colder than here. I have a friend who lives just outside NY who delights in sending me pictures of the snow and then taking the piss out of our measly 1 inch that seesm to bring the whole country to a grinding halt.

Stayed in Sarasota (somewhere near St. Armands Circle) last year but prefer Naples. Always have to find a Kilwin's or ColdStone Creamery. Mmm.

Neither do I. Still don't think I'll get too far: I'll need to check and make sure I didn't misread the meter before I call them and also take a good look at previous bills but I'll either have to pay or go without I suppose. Just had a quick look: 680 units since September.

I live in South Carolina USA. Most of our systems focus on cooling. IN the winter we run the A/C backward basically to heat. Most years this works out OK. This year my heating system didn't even shut off most of December and January resulting in electric charges that are 2.5 times more than I have ever paid in the same period ( same house) in a few years.

The entire system is only 4 years old. Actually, hmm, just had the boiler serviced a couple of months ago. Hmm. Ta: probaby a red herring but worth looking at: the boiler has kept losing pressure since it was serviced.

I feel your pain. Our gas bill is ~$350-400/mo from Dec. through March and that's keeping the very average size house less than 70F. :(( And our winter (northern Illinois) hasn't been bad this year.

Proud to have finally moved to the A-Ark. Which one are you in?

I've got the same problem. Adding insult to injury the heat I almost never use (I only actually turned the heat on for a few days when the highs were in the single digits this winter and only actually heard it kicking on once per evening) is paid for by the landlord, but the air conditioner runs on electricity I pay for.

I assume that you burn hobos to make up the shortfall.

VB developers are more plentiful though the quality does suffer compared to hobos ;P

No, heat pumps[^]. They work great for cooling but their efficiency as a heater sucks when it gets really cold. When really cold is rare they're still better than spending a few grand on a separate furnace; but that doesn't make them cheap to run when it happens.
