The article you linked to is a satire of 3D, right? I don't see how it compares though. 3D text would be utterly useless, but 3D on screen is bloody brilliant. Or maybe the author is just having a bit of fun thinking about the "possibilities" (or lack thereof) of 3D text. I almost believed it until I saw that it was supposed to work by duplicating a word and bolding it... but the text had some of the duplicated words line wrap after the original word. I've heard of being able to create a 3D effect by placing two images next to eachother (not sure how that works), but I very much doubt it would work if the words were not even next to eachother.
