This is now becoming as ridiculous the whole worm court fiasco! I can tracert mail.jnrcs.org, I can ping it and it responds, but trying to telnet gives me a no route to host!!!!! Can anyone take a jab at explaining what's going on?

Did you try to ping on the telnet port? ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:yyyy Just checking that your telnet port isnt blocked at either end. Also might be worth tracert with port for telnet. As an update check this KB article from MS Article[^]

Last I checked you can't ping a port. But I know for a fact its not blocked. I personally set it as an open port and in addition to several other CP members' ability to telnet to said server as evidenced in Web Telnet II[^] :)

Last I checked you can't ping a port. But I know for a fact its not blocked. I personally set it as an open port and in addition to several other CP members' ability to telnet to said server as evidenced in Web Telnet II[^] :)

Did you check out the article I posted a link to? It could be a server on the route that is denying telnet. So it could be a matter of finding out which servers you go through compared to those that have succeeded and then targetting them for telnet sessions as in the article.

I can ping to mail.jnrcs.org (resolves to 212.38.147.97 which seems to be correct according Telnet II) with an average of 131ms, tracert also takes about 131ms. I cannot telnet to port 25 but I get a connection to Exchange IMAP4 on port 143 Hope this helps and good luck in getting it to work again

I have SSH (22) closed and besides, I'm trying to see why email is not working from home all of a sudden.

Trying it, and now I'm getting no route to host again. This is so frustrating.

Why not map SSH to a different port. Telnet is outdated and insecure. Cool kids now use SSH.

Ping is a tool that uses the ICMP protocol. That protocol does not define ports. Where did you get that idea from??

Because the Windows version of the tool, or at least the default one, doesn't support ports. I thought this was the case too until I started using OpenVMS, which does have a version of ping that supports ports.

Maybe it's a router issue? Maybe the router(s) that control access to jnrcs.org or mail.jnrcs.org are blocking that? Or blocking it from a certain range of ip addrs/?

Have you tried running a packet sniffer at your end to see the response received from the SYN packet? A quick google suggests: "No route to host" is the consequence of receiving an ICMP "host unreachable" error message. This usually means that the router which sent the ICMP message knows how to route the packet but the ARP resolution for the next hop address failed. A router which has no route for the destination would send an ICMP "network unreachable" error message instead. FWIW: I tried to telnet in as well but get 'could not open connection to the host, on port 25 : Connect failed' (Windows XP telnet client)

It never ceases to amaze me that people refuse to use a secure protocol like SSH and instead use Telnet which is easily hackable and doesn't encrypt anything (including password and ID) and somehow think they're being more secure.

I accidently omitted a "not" in my previous post. OpenVMS must be doing something other than ICMP/Ping, because the ICMP protocol is fully port agnostic (except that it can report that ports aren't available, typically UDP ports). See here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ping[^] "Note that ICMP (and therefore Ping) resides on the Network layer (level 3) of the OSI (Open Systems Interconnection) model.
