Windows XP Mode No Longer Requires A Processor Capable of Virtualization

How many processors are out there that are suitable for W7 Pro, but don't have virtualization? My problems with XP mode were: - IDE Drive size Limit - No single tool to downsize, un-HAL and import single partition as VHD and one continued annoyance - removing "Shutdown" from the virtualized start menu.

All current AMD processors support virtualization. Only a select few of Intel do. You have to be careful buying Intel because they are very segmented. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X86_virtualization[^] http://www.tomshardware.com/news/windows-xp-mode-virtualization-intel,7709.html[^] http://ark.intel.com/VTList.aspx[^] You can see that even within the same family some Intel procs support virtualization and some don't. A lot of people have been burned by not double and triple checking the Intel processor specs when purchasing because it's not very clear.

Given that list, it makes sense - I dodn't expect that much fragmentation within single processor families.

So if you're buying a new computer with those procs, you're ok. However, if you're a company like us, we simply don't have the budget to go out and buy new computers right now. We do have a Microsoft site-license so we can upgrade to Win 7 with money that has already been spent. My current machine is a 2.8 GHz Pentium D that doesn't support hardware virtualization (we got burned). So this announcement is very welcome because we can now run XP-mode (which comes with a fully licensed copy of Windows XP) without making an additional purchase.

You should try out VMware Player 3, it's free and I believe it will do those things for you. Concerning the shutdown issue: I have the same problem using remote desktop but I've found using ctrl-alt-end in remote desktop mode translates to ctrl-alt-delete on the remote machine. Maybe it will have the same effect in XP mode?

VMWare doesn't have the XP licence XP Mode comes with. Microsoft did "some funny things" to enable automatic logon in XP Mode, and somehow this interacts with the shutdown. (maybe they need it for desktop integration of XP Mode programs).It works quite different from remote desktop The remote connection integrated in Hyper-V manager works best for me - don't know why each of these has to be different. :rolleyes:

If you were using Intel however, it was pretty much a crapshoot on which chip would allow you to run XP mode. (2) I wonder what caused them to rethink this -- the number of people burned by the fact they couldn't run XP mode as advertised, or the fact that VMware just worked (especially now that VMware Player 3 pretty much has all the features of prior Workstation versions that most people would use. And it's free.) [to be honest you still need a hardware virtualization capable chip to run 64-bit guest OS's in VMware]

I just pulled the trigger on a Dell that's okay for my needs, but doesn't have the i3 or i5 processor. I would have bought one that did, but it would take 3 to 4 weeks to get here, and I wasn't willing to be that long without a laptop. So, I bought a similar one on their Fast Track program, which means it's already built, sitting in a box and ready to ship. The downside is no customizations, but it had 4 GB / 320 hard drive, Win 7 Pro and covered the bases so there wasn't much I would have customized anyway. The upside is free overnight shipping, so it'll go out Monday & be here Tuesday. I was a little concerned at giving up XP mode just in case something didn't play nice, but now everything's just fine.
