CodeProject is Dead
-
It's finally happened. CodeProject has become a victim of its own usefulness and popularity. We've been overrun by hordes of purile and moronic trolls. What's the point any more? Chris can't possibly hope to curtail the rampant misuse of the self-submitted article system, and moderating the lounge is opens up a legal can of worms where liability is concerned (on Chris' part). Welcome to perdition. ------- signature starts "...the staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - Jason Jystad, 10/26/2001 Please review the Legal Disclaimer in my bio. ------- signature ends

That's a pessimistic way of looking at it. The article posting thing is actually reasonably easily fixed (easy == about a weekend's worth of work. Anyone got a spare weekend they can loan me?) and the message board thing can also be fixed - if it's a real issue - by doing things like only allowing silver (or above) members from posting. Would that be useful though? Would it kill the spirit and make the barrier to entry (and fun) too high? On the other hand post ratings may be the way to go, with associated post filtering. We're a long way from dead ;) cheers, Chris Maunder

The ranking only appears on there ASP page. 3 choices. Inappropriate, OK, On-Topic. My real concern is having Inappropriate posts linked to the top of the Index page. ( But at the end of the day it's your site ) As to the " Codeproject is Dead " statement, I disagree CP is evolving when it stops evolving it then risks having a death. The interesting thing is I'm sure CP has evolved in ways that "you" the originators never imagined. Regardz Colin J Davies

I should probably post this in the suggestion area but... Chris Maunder wrote: Anyone got a spare weekend they can loan me? In about 3 weeks I could start donating soem time to go through some articles... Chris Maunder wrote: by doing things like only allowing silver (or above) members from posting. NO, wrong... bad idea X| We need to keep all areas open to people that want to post. I WOULD recomend that we restrict posting to those that are not members. If someone wants to post then they should go through the process to become a member. We can give all annons thier own message area to wallow in if they need it.... I think that the article issues that have cropped up lately could be addressed with a bit of creativity... 1 - Never show the unedited / unapproved articles anywhere on the site unless people go to view them. Don;t list them as new on the front page at all. 2 - Allow people to be notified via email (OR desktop Bob :-D ) when new articles in thier subscribed area of interest are available. 3 - People can go view the new articles and vote on them before they appear on the site. 4 - If the article get sa good enough vote within a certain time period it becomes available for the general public to read off of the front page and via search.

Ditto. www.codetools.com died over the weekend for my DNS servers. I guess Chris just let that domain finally run out. Tim Smith I'm going to patent thought. I have yet to see any prior art.

John Simmons / outlaw programmer wrote: CodeProject has become a victim of its own usefulness and popularity. We've been overrun by hordes of purile and moronic trolls. You think so? Seems a tad dramatic. I'm comparitively new here, but I'd say 70% of threads have some level of interest in them, which is pretty high for anywhere on the internet. The rest I just skip as soon as I see what they're about. Or maybe I'm just a moronic troll who finds interest in purile things. The more people that come in, the more there are to help people out when they run into problems and the more there are to write articles (which is what brings more people in than anything else). The only "problem" that needs resolving is the dubious and/or useless articles that get posted, diminishing the value of a strongly written article that someone has clearly spent time on. This is a tricky problem to resolve though, for greater minds than mine. Paul I think there're pieces of me you've never seen - Tori Amos, Tear in Your Hand
