A week or so ago I was bitching about having to drive an SUV because I needed to haul band gear to gigs. Someone (I forget who, hence my taking it out on the entire community), told me a tale of owning a Corvette and hauling a trailer to gigs. Well, that got me to thinking, and I came to the conclusion that I could just buy an old beater van to haul gear to gigs. If you want a long lasting car, then yes treat it carefuly in the first few thousand. But if you want the most out of the car, performance wise, then thrashing it when you first get it is a good thing. But then of course the life of the car is reduced. Then again a Corvette is hardly wanting for performance in any state :-D

I hate driving my hual space on a daily basis, and was looking for some way to free myself from the shackles of Trailer Opression. I was actually considering pulling a trailer from a hot rod, and then when I saw the Ferrarri / beater car this weekend, it just clicked in my mind. But in the end it's all your fault as you're the one who got me started on this, and you've made the lounge suffer for your sins! :-D By the way, have you driven the 2003 models yet? One of our local Chevy dealers is a race sponser that runs two Vettes in the SCCA races on a regional basis. The manager there is an old friend of mine ( Richard Schmit ) and we usually take a test ride or two in the new cars. The new Vettes have a new improved computer controlled suspension and anti - spin technology that is awesome . Take a 45% turn at speed with almost NO body lean or drift. Downshift at 40 and punch it and it accelerates with no wheel slip at all. The areodynamics of the new cars eliminate the need for external spoilers and probably add another 5-10 mph to the top speed but as far as production street cars are concerned this is of mixed benefit because the front end can actually bottom out on full braking unless the suspension is the sports type - and then the ride is kinda rough. The engine is about the same as last two model years with a supposedly finer tuned paer range but I did not see any difference. Another thing we noticed is that the car is incredibly sensitive to tire pressure. A difference of one-two pounds in the front tires could be felt as over-steer. Picky Picky. I'm to fat and old to drive one of these cars on a daily basis and can't really justify the 40000.00 price tag or the 2500.00 a year insurance costs. What I really want is one of the new Thunderbirds but the waiting list is far to long and my wife is making threatening noises everytime I mention one. So I guess its the old pedesterian SUV for me.
