If you don't spend a lot of time in planes, I would not get an e-book reader. Depending on your requirements, I would go with a second monitor or a laptop.

I spend a lot of times on plans but I still have no interest in an ebook reader. I'm just too old fashioned about owning the books that I buy. Everything I've read so far indicates that the drm prevents gifting, lending, trading and re-selling of the books. I wish I was wrong because they seem like nifty gizmos (my wife got me a kindle but I sent if back because of the aforementioned drm limitations)

My wife got me a kindle last christmas and it was slicker than grease but, the DRM on the ebooks was too restrictive so I returned it.

I agree with all the drm drawbacks and another you mey not be affected by, regional limitations. Having said that I have used ereader for a few years now and find them better than the dead tree format. I recently read a paperback and was constantly irritated by the need to get the light right and holding the pages right, the ereader was actually more comfortable.

As most have recommended, get a 2nd monitor, ereaders and PDF are crap, ereaders and novels on the other hand are excellent.

If you want to continue to do reading and coding simultaneously e-book reader may not help. You are probably better off with a dual monitor. Keep one monitor with e-book open and another monitor with VS open. E-book readers works great when you are relaxed and away from a computer, waiting at a Barber shop for your turn, waiting outside the White-house to get your turn to speak to the president, waiting and relaxing in a Starbucks at the mall while your wife is shopping, sitting on a long flight or when you are in a tent at a camp.

I'll stick with books and printed PDFs. My father-in-law has a Kindle; he uses it mostly for his daily paper. Last Christmas we wanted to buy a book for him, but couldn't find a way to buy a book for someone else's Kindle.

I was considering the same thing a while ago but took TrollSlayers' advice and decided not to. I don't read many fiction books any more and the consensus seems to be that they are not yet good enough with technical books/PDFs. Not to mention the DRM problems.

I have a sony, 500. And I do enjoy it. I agree with the consensus; great for novels. Not great or even good for anything technical. Lousy for anything where you have to find pages or look at multiple sections over a small time period. Excellent if you want to read books with expired copyrights. Like novels from the late 1800's. These are the sorts of things you can't easily get at a library but you can read them in this form if someone has taken them from Project Gutenberg. Ironic, using the newest technologies to read the oldest books (superlatives inserted for effect, I know that this isn't the newest and I doubt you can find much incunabula for e-readers). You might consider a netbook and just set it next to your computer for tech stuff. Prices being what they are. There is also a problem that every book you want isn't necessarily available in e-form. Usually this means your favorite series. What else... If you accidentally drop your paperback into the water at the beach or your tub you mostly can just rebuy the book- not so with the e-readers. You lose a very expensive machine. The books usually can be re-downloaded for free. You are at the mercy of the manufacturer if they decide to do something dramatic like change how drm works. Next thing you know you have to send in your device for a firmware update or else no longer be able to load new books into it. These devices do not like extreme heat or cold, so you have to remember to not leave it in the car on an extreme day. They are good if you have to wait anywhere. My usual place is doctor's waiting rooms while waiting for my wife to get her appointment. I also use mine a lot at lunch. It means I don't have to decide which book I'm taking before I go. The BOOKS AREN'T CHEAPER. At least not enough to justify. I used to wonder what the f they were thinking selling me an e-book for a greater price than amazon would ship the hardback for. I'm probably forgetting something else big but that should give you the jist. In keeping: KITTY: "I was reading a book the other day." CARLOTTA: "Reading a book?" KITTY: "Yes. It's all about civilization or something, a nutty kind of a book. Do you know that the guy said that machinery is going to take the place of every profession?" CARLOTTA: "Oh, my dear, that's something you need never worry about."

Personally I wouldn't bother just yet, at least not a dedicated one. The ones I have tried have all seemed a little sluggish and I'm not sure I could spend that long reading off one for the money required to purchase such an item. Hopefully in a couple more years we should start seeing colour eInk readers and they should be getting faster so I'd then be more inclined. If you've got a smart phone then you could always get an e-book app for that. I've got an Android phone and I'm using Aldiko which is a brilliant app plus you can purchase o'reilly books through it, not quite as good as a real book but still very nice and convenient as I've always got my phone on me. There are a number for the iPhone as well, not sure about Symbian or Palm's WebOS.

I'd say either an iPad, or if you don't like the restrictive iPhone OS, wait for the HP Slate PC coming in June, which is basically a Windows 7 iPad. I'm considering the HP Slate route though I only hope (pray) that it doesn't suck. The reason I'd go for one of those two is because they're in colour, Amazon Kindle DX isn't even though it can handle technical PDFs quite well, and quite a few technical computer books use colour, especially the designy ones on HTML, CSS, Silverlight etc.

I have had an e-book reader for some time now. When I purchased it the intent was to use it for both work and leisure. As others have mentioned it didnt pan out for work because of problems with the pdf rendering. For leisure it has proven a godsend. I have finally read War & Peace (in addition to a number of purchased titles). Something that I have never done before purely because of the fact that most of my reading gets done when on travel and carting either very large books or worse still multiple books (for when you finish the one you are currently reading) is just unmanageable. All of the above taken into consideration I am now seriously considering the iPad (or similar) so that I can revisit the original intent of work and play in one device. I get tired flipping and reding books in acrobar Reader in one wondow and the developing code in another. Should I buy E-reder? You suggestion please.

Apologies first for not having an answer to your question. I'd like to expand on the question a bit. I read a report recently of a pilot project in Ireland where a class of school kids got e-readers instead of books, but they could do their homework on these e-readers too. My interest in e-readers would be to download the daily newspaper before leaving for work every morning. Does anyone know of an e-reader that would allow me to to the daily crossword on it?

If you want to continue to do reading and coding simultaneously e-book reader may not help. You are probably better off with a dual monitor. Keep one monitor with e-book open and another monitor with VS open. E-book readers works great when you are relaxed and away from a computer, waiting at a Barber shop for your turn, waiting outside the White-house to get your turn to speak to the president, waiting and relaxing in a Starbucks at the mall while your wife is shopping, sitting on a long flight or when you are in a tent at a camp.

I've got a Sony and a Kindle--I agree with others that for technical books, the eReaders aren't so good. It takes a second or two to turn a page. Flipping or searching through a book to find something is just too slow. My girlfriend reads a lot of novels and loves her Kindle. It's amazing to order a book and within seconds it's on the device. It takes longer than that to page through the preface pages of the book. I'll add my vote for a second monitor.
