HP has been dead in the water for a while, this could be the last gasp.

Don't be cynical. I bet their purchase of Palm makes as much sense as the one of Compaq.

I suppose it's too much to hope for, but... (folks tell me that HP's hardware has gone down-hill lately as well, but I'm still quite fond of my ten-year-old scanner and 7-year-old printer... just so long as I avoid using HP's drivers. I like things that last...)

Purchasing a product is a great way to do away with it. Just ask Microsoft.

I had a printer (HP PSC 750?) that lasted about that long. It finally quit on me, but it was a nice run. I got some other printer/scanner (not HP) for $40. I'd be quite happy if it lasts half as long as my old HP.

True. But if they though Palm could be improved or stabilized, then buying it makes sense too. In either case, it's safer to own it then not to.

Follow the same "Wait six months" mantra as above and you'd be able to buy Greece for that amount.

Eh, no... The stuff I bought years ago is still working, but the newer stuff doesn't last (or so I hear). Point being, Palm desperately needs to improve their build quality, and that's something HP traditionally could have provided... Whether they still have engineers who can do that is another question.
