So which of your ancestors was the one in millions who did any work?

OK, OK, I knew I should have just walked away and not commented here, but I ignored my best judgement, opened my mouth and someone stuck their fist in it. Maybe it's the lump in my head making me go where other fear to tread, maybe I was just doing it knowing that I would get a response... Now, I need to make the decision of how to react. Just walk away or continue the interaction... And my answer Alex is 'The question asked is irrelevant'. Do you honestly know what each of your descendants DID that had a positive (in your opinion) effect on the progression of the world? Come on dude, get serious. Look at things as they really are. Everyone here through history does 'things'. Some consider each thing as 'good' or 'bad', but in reality they are simply actions that cause reactions. Pick up a book on basic cause and effect and you can learn that. I never said that any on my ancestors had MORE of an impact than anyone else's. I merely stated a fact that unless you were a NATIVE to this country, or someone brought here against their will we are ALL immigrants. We ALL have a lineage and I am sure that ANYONE that looks back far enough can find someone in their tree that had some positive effect on how the country progressed. Do I know mine, no I admit I don't. BUT, Give me a break from crying out loud. Anyone that came here, broke soil, raised a family, worked, contributed, voted, didn't break a law, made a friend, survived, learned, taught their children respect, and just about anything that had a freaking impact helped the country move in a direction. Ah.... never mind.... I don't have enough room in this text area to fight this fight right now... OK, I guess this brain lump I got has had one side effect on me after all... It has made me far to prone to comment on someone that is obviously just looking to start an argument. I gotta write this down so I don't forget... NOTE TO SELF: Don't allow goofs to bait you into a argumentdiscussion

      the real reason

The real reason is ranchers being shot by coyotes, over extended school system, over extended health care system with illegals freeloading in emergency rooms. All Arizona did is make illegal aliens, illegal, following the unenforced US law template. US would be better served if we adopt Mexico's immigration law. click.[^]

People who throw around such terms are lawless and seek the destruction of the US. Oh by the way do you know what La Raza means in English?

I know it was not meant in any malicious way. It's just that with several recent laws in Arizona and a candidate for governor in Alabama making xenophobia a central plank in his platform, I'm a little touchy about the subject.

What can I say? I don't speak Spanish, so I had to consult Google. Translations for "People": 1. personas 2. gente 3. pueblo 4. habitantes 5. nación 6. familia 7. amigos 8. súbditos 9. antepasados Translations for "Race": 1. raza 2. carrera 3. prueba 4. regata 5. estirpe 6. casta 7. familia But Google's translators are hardly infallible - maybe we can solve this mystery by meticulously analyzing the organization's web site? Oh here it is, wasn't that hard to find after all:

"the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States – works to improve opportunities for Hispanic Americans."

(Emphasis mine) Given the organization's own description of itself, it seems likely that they are working for one specific race (it's anyone's guess which) rather than the American people as a whole.

Yes you were from immigrants, unless you currently reside in Africa. Why only go back to your grandparent's time? Just because it is convenient for you? This immigrant vs. non-immigrant concept is ridiculous and entirely arbitrary nonsense. Even "native Americans" aren't really native if you take ancestry into account. Science's best guess, at this point, is that the first creatures that could be called human lived is sub-Saharan Africa - so if you're not currently living there, you (i.e. your ancestors) immigrated to wherever you are.

Because we use ethnicity to track distinctive traits. Reducing everyone to sub-Saharan descent is disingenious. It essentially is an attempt to remove all individuality in the disctinct groups and act like we are all one big homogeneous gene-pool. It is just as much a bit of nonsense as being upset by these differences and judging people as inferior because they are a different group. Pillowpants is using a pretty specific definition for immigrant. Someone that enters a nation with the express intent on living there. For a legal immigrant there is a process. He desires all immigrants attempt to assimilate into the dominant culture and behave as if their cultural traditions should be thrown away because they are inferior in his mind. Using his definition of immigrant, I am not one. I am unconcerned with race or ethnicity for the most part. The only time it bugs me is when my last name causes people to act a certain way with me.

There is a difference between helping Hispanics get ahead and trying to put down everyone but Hispanics.

If an organization was designed to help white blue eyed folks get ahead, they would certainly be called racists and tied to Neo-Nazi's. Just a thought though. I am neither. Although my grouping at one point in time use to get tossed in to the fire upon birth. If somehow that didn't happen they were tortured by some religous folks thinking we are the devils children. Yet we have no group or ogranization that helps us. We get by OK ;P

Would an "oops" suffice for my faux pas.

I am white, and my eyes go back and forth between green and blue, based on what I wear. I agree that they would be called that, by the same people who think it is ok for a minority. But,like so many other things, it depends. Are you trying to make things fair, now, or get back at someone? Farrakhan wants blacks on top. Bad. The KKK (etc) wants to get whites on top. Bad. The NAACP wants to advance colored persons. Good. The Irish American Society has pub nights. That can't be bad.

Ouch. I hate it when that happens. Do you mind telling me what group? Are you mixed race? Name looks Polish or Slavic (so I'd expect white, but you say not). I didn't think either got burned very often, unless the Germans and Russians are in cahoots. Should I just STFU?

From the earlier post, you don't consider yourself white? I didn't know ginger [^]was a different race check box.
