Exactly. I think this is what these companies don't get (or perhaps just don't care about). I'd like to think there's a bit more to life than just randomly browsing the web or get stock ticker updates. And I'd like something that doesn't chain me to a desk. But I realize I'm asking for too much. Next I'll want a flying car!

Yeah, I probably wouldn't get the first gen one either. By the time the 2nd gen iPad roles around it'll probably have some of the stuff it's lacking now.

So with all this talk about tablets and non-desktop form factors, here's what I would consider a magical revolutionary device and how I'd go about tackling it. I've been thinking about something like this for the past 3 or 4 years now, and especially since getting into 3D, I've been wishing more and more that there was something suitable. The driving idea behind the whole thing is something as simple and elegant as paper and pencil. I'd like to see something about the size of a notepad, say 8.5 X 11, with as much room as possible devoted to the screen, maybe a thumbswidth border around the screen. Couldn't be very thick either and it would have be reasonably durable. The screen would support multi-touch, as well as a full on tablet digitizer, pressure sensitivity, the whole 9 yards. It would be thick enough to support USB ports on the side, the hard drive would be SSD only. Some sort of optical drive would need to be in there as well. Or maybe not, maybe with support for USB, an external drive would be OK. Bluetooth support for external devices would be a must and it would have to exceptionally well implemented. There would be *no* physical keyboard. With the USB ports you can add that if you want it. The iPhone, I think, has demonstrated that for a number of use cases, a virtual keyboard is more than good enough. Because you've got a lot more screen real estate, you don't have to worry about scrunched fingers, it should relatively easy to make typing on it usable for most cases, and for more intensive use, you can always hook up an external keyboard. Ditto for the mouse, external if you want it, but not built in. The size means you've got something big enough to be creative with, it's big enough to easily visualize documents at 100% or near 100% resolution. The graphics should be a really solid graphics card, no crappy integrated cards - you should be able to run decent 2D/3D creative suites on this thing. The UI would NOT be just another copy of Windows. Keeping with the paper/pencil metaphor, you'd have one major window full screen. You might have tool windows here and there, but by and large you'd have one primary window. You could easily switch, and you wouldn't be limited to single tasking (from an OS stand point). Keeping the UI as uncluttered as possible would be an absolute must. Keeping the core preferences as simple as possible, with *well* thought out defaults so you can use it out of the box with as little as hassle as possible. Windows Explorer would be gone. Some so

I think the idea was to allow for more than just apps from the Apple Store. Something that can run Windows apps, which means you could use AutoCad or various programs like that. But yeah, a lot of the description describes the iPad. Personally, I don't know why I need a bigger iPhone, since there's not much else that was added. A friend of mine already had the iPhone 3G and a Kindle and went out and got an iPad. What he wanted to do that the other two couldn't, I'm not sure...unless he wants to watch movies on a bigger screen.

Yeah that's one of the drawbacks for me too. I'm really eying the 4th gen iPhone for when it comes out, and as such probably won't have a need for an iPad. If I'm gonna do CAD it's gonna be a powerful desktop anyway.

I don't think so. I think the whole frame of mind behind the iPad is that you're just a passive consumer of content. It's not meant to be an authoring solution, or at least it really doesn't seem that way to me.

The Slate? There was something on The Register that claimed that HP was going to kill it. HP does have they TouchSmart, which seems like some interesting hardware, but the problem is that it's just running windows 7. Windows needs to be full revamped for what I'd like to see.

Agreed, just fine for lying in bed using codeproject, reading the news, facebook, getting the weather, checking email. I use my Nexus One for that at the moment. I find a full blown laptop is just overkill for this purpose, too heavy, clunky. (yes, i have a laptop for the side of the bed)

I checked on that last link. I couldn't figure out if they were claiming that the iPad *might* have this stuff in it, or it does in fact have a pressure sensitive screen that merely needs to be utilized.

Until "we" find an efficient battery technology with punch, all tablets will suck. - Stylus: non, it's a bad thing, you loose it and bitch around, more so if application/os demands it for some "feature". - USB port, why not, 1, 2 max, as small as possible; as long as you have that, using external devices are a no-brainer (except support for all the different driver types and related snafu that WILL happen). - ... Me think Microsoft could for the software, but it's the hardware that could be a problem for them, they do not have the "computer" expertise, yeah they do good enough mices and keybaord, and the zune, I assume is good enough, but their history in that sense is not that good ( remember the Origami projects ? ) M.

AFAIK it's not built in. Only fancy thing about the display I'm aware of is it uses IPS LCD technology.

OK, based on their page, it's just the iPad, or something similar. It's for browsing the web, watching videos. I don't want that. I want something I can create stuff on. Author all my legal documents, edit all my spreadsheets, compose music, paint portraits, edit video, take notes etc. Neither ChromeOS, the various iDevices, or Win7 mobile actually address this AFAIK.

Who would be the market for this? Serious content creators? Not enough power, and the limitations of current tech being what they are, it wouldn't do enough. Without that graphics card, it wouldn't be worth the money to compete with a desktop. With that graphics card it dies in an hour or 2. Handwriting recognition is almost as hard to do as speech. You have to train the program or the person for it to work and no one likes that. The tech is just plain not there yet. 5 years from now, maybe. But I don't think MS will be the ones to bring it about. They won't redo Windows to this extent. If they did, people might demand it happen for the desktops...

Well I personally wouldn't want a mouse or keyboard. But some people might, so you make it an option. But it would be intended to be used without any of the external stuff.
