I'm out in the sunshine... naked. A few minutes ago, I heard a woman scream. She must have stepped on a nail.

Yup, outside enjoying a frigid gale-force wind, pulling greasewood stumps with my truck and digging up dead agave plants, transporting two grape vines and a trio of arbor vitae shrubs to a new home, then grilling jalapenos stuffed with sausage and cheese on a barbeque that has trouble staying lit in this wind. Now I'm stuffed, too, feeling sandblasted to boot, and I'm out of beer. Time for a scotch, I think.

Are they any easier than the live ones? I spent a few hours ripping just one of the big ones out and my arms were covered with blisters for at least a week. After you get past the insanely sharp spines, the interior is filled with even nastier stuff. I guess that's how tequila was invented, they boiled it down and drank it out of spite.

I didn't know the sap was so caustic; I didn't get any on me. The dead one I just rocked back a forth a few times and then pulled straight up. It came apart at ground level, and I then had to remove the subsurface bits a little at a time. Moving the 40+ "babies" around it was a little more strenuous, but not too difficult, as we'd soaked the ground the night before. By the way, it's worth the extra time to clip the sharp points off all the leaves before starting, and doesn't hurt the plant a bit. :-D
