Microsoft wins! Judge accepted settlement. Maybe we can move on now!!!!Slashdot must have been trolling the court's web server - they had the links up at about 3:05 - 25 minutes before release.

Cool. I hope some retarded "I'm l33t3r than th0u"-kiddies will cry themselves to sleep tonight. However, I do not condone how Microsoft does business every now and then. But that doesn't mean they should be hacked into pieces. -- Master, I'm so glad to feel your presence. But you don't seem to share my impatience. I relied upon you to break the silence. I cannot understand your reluctance. Master, I feel so warm and I'm so happy, oh master. Give me some more of the warm little beasts I'm so fond of.

By the way; what kind of jury is used during such a trial? Any Joe Average is hardly a "peer" in a case like this, nor is it very easy to find unbiased people... -- Master, I'm so glad to feel your presence. But you don't seem to share my impatience. (1) Nine other states are pursuing their own case. (2) Microsoft "wins" in the sense that they were found guilty as charged* (previously decided), but most of the watered-down provisions suggested by Microsoft were accepted. * Microsoft was found to have violated antitrust laws, illegally maintaining its monopoly over computer software operating systems by strong-arming competitors. But an appeals court threw out a previous order that would break the company in two, leaving Kollar-Kotelly to decide how Microsoft should be punished. http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/aptech_story.asp?category=1700&slug=Microsoft%20Antitrust[^] The settlement would prevent Microsoft from participating in exclusive deals that could hurt competitors; require uniform contract terms for computer manufacturers; allow manufacturers and customers to remove icons for some Microsoft features; and require that the company release some technical data so software developers can write programs for Windows that work as well as Microsoft products do. So, Microsoft has to use uniform contract terms with OEMs. At least they won't be able to do their old trick of telling OEMs "do as we say or we'll charge you more for Windows and your competitors will eat you alive". I'll be interesting to see how Microsoft will wiggle it's way around this one, though. (Because you know they will.) allow manufacturers and customers to remove icons for some Microsoft features Unfortunately, the damage is already done. MS has market dominance in those areas. The key was to put this provision in place before they gained market dominance. It would've been nice to see Microsoft actually punished. Instead, the DOJ says, "Gee, you've done a lot of nasty things in the past. We'll pretend they didn't happen, but we're going to make sure you don't do it again (at least not in the same way that you did before)." All in all, MS does a great job writing software. Too bad they feel they have to resort to nasty strong-arm anti-competitive behavior. They should be spanked. ------------------------------------------ "Isn't it funny how people say they'll never grow up to be their parents, then one day they look in the mirror and they're moving aircraft carrie

"However, Microsoft must allow access to documents and source code to the Plaintiff States where the code or docs relate to the judgment made. However, the States may look, but they can't publish this information themselves." Very fair - providing they aren't leaked I suppose. But then, I guess a corporation as big as MS doesn't need little people like me sticking up for them ;P

It's interesting the time on the slashdot article now says 3:33 (this is the update time when they added the brief summary, I think). I wonder if they will have some disclosure issues - there was recently something in the news about a company suing a news outlet over releasing their financials before they were officially released. Apparently they found the link on the site and used it. Surely messing with a Federal Judge and staff is not a good thing. It was originally intended to be released after the market closed, but I bet they had it prior. Shut down slashdot? That would be nice!;)

Not decided by a jury. I would say more but I am totally unclear when and where trials by juries come into play. Probably has a lot to do with criminal and civil courts. Tim Smith I'm going to patent thought. I have yet to see any prior art.

Yeah, let's shut down people who don't think like you. Actually, it's the folks that don't think at all (95% of slashdot) that wouldn't bother me. Occassionally you will find some very insightful comments, but you have to read through hundreds of idiots to get there. Slashdot is hardly 'the place to go' for enlightened thought.

Sorry, i was thinking of Roger Allen, i think. Both were self-aware signatures, hence the confusion. :-O Shog9 ------ Googlism:
