A lottery is a tax on people who are bad at math. That being said, if you can afford the long term losses it can be fun to play. Last year I hit a $2000 prize and dozens of $5 wins. This year I've hit a $200 and a $100, plus several $50 wins. I don't keep track of the more frequent wins that just cover the cost of the ticket, but overall I've been breaking even most of the time with a couple of large wins. But bear in mind - math doesn't lie. If you play, you will lose, and in the long term you will lose more than you win. The trick, like gambling, is to get lucky, win big, and quit while you're ahead. Do you feel lucky today?

Interesting. Do you play alone or in syndicate? How much you invested (!) for those mentioned wins?

Why does asking about the lottery bring out the most ridiculous annoying superior attitude in people? "oh I don't play the lottery, I'm not an idiot like you" Only an idiot *wouldn't* play the lottery. It's cheap, it's fun to watch the draws, in almost any area the lottery funds are used for things like hospitals and important social causes and finally there is a chance you could win. There are probably less than 6 degrees of separate between most of us and a decent sized jackpot winner. So to all you supercilious bastards out there enjoy your miserable attitudes.

You nearly hit the bull’s-eye, hope this should justify why to play lottery.

Lost another 6 pounds on euromillion last week :(( I am in circle from almost a year now, never won even a penny, thankfully never lost a huge amount though. Is there any formula (which actually work) to increase probability to win even small amounts. How much you ever won or lost?

If you Bingle for that you will find lots of 'foolproof' schemes but you have to ask yourself a question "do you feel lucky, punk! Well, do ya!!" er.. sorry. "If I found a genuinely foolproof way to win the lottery, would I share it? Thus reducing my winnings." At the end of the day whether you win anything or not is a bit of a lottery and that's the point really.

The Powerball jackpot has a 1:195,249,054 probability. The next drawing has an estimated jackpot of $260,000,000. Ignoring the possibility of having to share, that seems like a pretty good bet to me.

Exactly! You don't need to spend 100s o 1000s of dollars every week. That will be stupid. I spend about $1-$5 when the jackpot really gets bug (> $150 million). And in that last 10 years I have been almost break even. I have won $5 a few times.

True, but you might want to do some Risk Assessment on this one as the chances of actually winning back what you've put in are already rather slim, and those of winning a considerable sum of money are dramatically reduced.

In the last 10 years I may have won around $40 or so. I have lost as much or probably a little more. I am not a compulsive buyer and I keep my limits. Play for fun, not for winning and that way you might win :).

Don't people usually say there is, on average, 6 degrees of separation between you and any other person on the planet? If so, then it is probably a safe bet that the same degree of separation would be between any person and a decent sized jackpot winner.

Great, you made my mind to keep the momentum. I am in same league, never spent more then few pound. People thought before throwing same amount for sandwich, cookies or a drink, but when it comes to lottery they feel something really wrong in it.

For the most part I agree, but if you honestly get more enjoyment out of buying $15 worth of lottery tickets once a week instead of going to a movie (or other traditional entertainment activity) I don't see anything wrong with it. (Not seeing anything wrong with it your having your fun that way not be seen as not questioning your sanity. )

Lost another 6 pounds on euromillion last week :(( I am in circle from almost a year now, never won even a penny, thankfully never lost a huge amount though. Is there any formula (which actually work) to increase probability to win even small amounts. How much you ever won or lost?

No. Anybody who tells you otherwise is an idiot or a liar.

The Powerball jackpot has a 1:195,249,054 probability. The next drawing has an estimated jackpot of $260,000,000. Ignoring the possibility of having to share, that seems like a pretty good bet to me.

Considering that the odds of being killed by lightning are about 1:1,000,000 I suspect life insurance is a better bet. ;P As to sharing, when you take the payout in a lump sum rather than spread over 25 years, you get about half of the total. Then you get to pay extortion taxes to the state and Feds, leaving you with about 60% of the already diminished total. You'll be practically a pauper with only $78 million to show for your risk. ;P
