Apparently it's only there for the day to publicise their new background image feature. But FFS why do it in the first place?

There's a "Change background image" link in the bottom left corner. However, that requires you to log in to iGoogle. If you don't want to create an account with Google, it looks like you'll have to live with those stupid images. Or, find a Greasemonkey script that restores the old Google look.

Yeah, I saw that. At the bottom of the page is "Was this page useful?" I smashed the NO button and typed in a very pointed GET THE BACKGROUND IMAGE THE F*CK OFF MY GOOGLE SEARCH PAGE!!!! Marc

Well, I'll be using some other search engine in the meantime. What a way to detract people from using Google. I wonder how many people will permanently switch over, mwahahahaa!!!! Marc

It not just bad enough that they have added the background image, but it changes every time you open a new google session. This is definitely not one of their finest hours............ Give me back the white!

If you headed to Google.com today and found the Bing-like background image enabled by default, don't freak out—it's apparently a 24-hour introduction of the feature, with backgrounds rotating on a random basis. If Google.com's a regular part of your day, and the background's distracting, do what commenter Cathoo recommends: hit the "Change Background Image" link in the lower-left, head to the "Editor's Picks" section, then scroll to the bottom to find the familiar, entirely white "theme." Or just wait until Google's background experiment reverts to its mostly-blank default.

Hmmmm.... our corporate head office is located in Canada, so, my google.com becomes google.ca... with no background image! So... solution: use google.ca!

I'm considering it. Not to bing, though... That's just as bad... Maybe yahoocares search... Anything without a giant bloody #(%*&@#()*%&#()*&Uing image every time I just want to find something.

OMG What is happening at Google? First the fade-in thing, now this?! I hope this is just their "New Coke" phase and they will come to their senses soon.

Someone in Google HQ must have thought that the troublesome little upstart (Bing) might have had a good idea with the backgrounds and decided to pull it into Google as a new and very unwanted feature. It could however be like one of the Google graphics things that are there for so long then vanish, but it appears to be missing a link if that is the case.
