Right now, you still need a computer to hook your iPad\iPhone up to in order to register it, back it up, transfer CDs onto it, get photos off it etc, etc. Possibly in 5-10 years time, when WiMax, with speeds of 100Mbits/s is everywhere, and your iTunes library is stored in the cloud, they may well discontinue Macs. Having said that, designers will still want to use Macs, because of having a proper keyboard and more importantly a mouse. I can't imagine trying to do fiddly design work using my sausage-like fingers.

The iPod line has been the star making Apple grow the most significantly since iTunes hit the PC. I recall reading in 2006 about how the Mac line was going to end because of the iPod. Again in 2009 because of the iPhone. I guess 2010 is time for the iPad to get this headline. Apple is not killing one of Steve Jobs' biggest babies (OSX is a repackaged NeXt OS with some improvements) and they aren't going to kill one of their most profitable divisions. In the really high end market ($1500+ per machine) Apple was dominant last I knew with over 80% of the market. That same market has the highest profit margin. (I'm not going to defend how much they cost, they had been competitive a few years ago but seem to be really putting the screws in of late. It's really insane right now.)

If I have accidentally said something witty, smart, or correct, it is purely by mistake and I apologize for it.

I agree: even the title strikes me as a complete non-sequitur. I mean, do companies usually kill off moderately successful products because another product is doing much better? (Especially when the less successful one serves as the only development platform for the successful one)

Me think the life cycle of computers and phones are not quite the same; and unless there are major innovation the new computers (from all makers) will only be incremental in features and performances, while phones (intelligent and dumb) are still in relative progression in regards of features and performance.

                  Watched code never compiles.

LOL! The article was funny. What the guy does not know is that sales of Mac's have been the best ever in recent times. But it is true that iPad like devices will be more for the general users and Mac and PC for more advanced users. But that's still a long way.

Don't get me wrong. I don't think it's going away anytime soon, but I can't remember the last mac commercial.

ROTFL. How sad it must be to work so hard to rise above the masses, that you don't take the time to understand what you're mocking.

Wrong. It's a repackaged version of BSD. NeXTOS was a fork of UNIX.

Open BSD. I am aware. It is also HEAVILY based on how NeXTOS was designed for "look and feel" which I think we can all agree is what matters most to Mr. Jobs. As long as it looks the way he likes and acts how he wants, Steve Jobs wouldn't care if Mac OS and the iPhone OS were run on baby seal fur and Fairy farts.
