Watching the world cup as an ice hockey fan...
-
About every 5 minutes or less some fool player rolls around on the ground clutching a body part like he's just been shot and the replay shows he was barely touched and all I can think is "what a bunch of pussies, who can stand to see grown men act like that?" followed quickly by "if these guys played hockey they'd be literally dead within a minute or less of the first period if they're that fragile" followed by "they're just trying to game the system though it's an embarrassment to watch". So which is it? Are they really that fragile or are they world class pussies that couldn't work a blue collar job where actual pain is involved or are they just trying to game the system? Has anyone *ever* really been injured seriously playing soccer, I mean it must happen by sheer force of co-incidence but it sure seems unlikely at the slow speed they're traveling and the lack of any blunt objects flying around other than the other players.

I also hate it, but being a soccer fan, i understand it. You may know the rules, but let me go on anyhow... This behavior can be consider foul by the refry and they can be shown a card. But it becomes a gamble since it has advantages. If you are in possession of the ball, and can´t progress on the field, it can give a free kick (this one is obvious) If you are not in possession of the ball, it will give your team a chance to reposition on defense. It can always get the refry to give a card to the opponent. And last, it will give the players a chance to "rest" since 8 out of 11 will have to be there for the 90 minutes. If the game had no pauses, most of them would not handle the 90 minutes making sprints. It sucks because breaks down the game pace, and the fans don´t really care about being tired since we are only lifting some beers :), but it has reason to exist.

This is where I've been doing my progressions with the frog stance frog stance progressions[^] The wrist, shoulder and squat clinic exercises have been really helpful for me as well. I've found the following pistol sequences to be helpful, along with just finding a hill and holding the low pose for as long as I can to build up the strength. pistol variations[^]

My google-fu is weak today*, but I've seen a picture of a soccer player with his knee bent forward at a 90* angle after something went catastrophically wrong. * writing help documentation rots the brain.

From what I can tell, it mostly trying to take advantage, depends a little where the game is played. It seems, and I could be wrong here, that this is a little more prevalent in Latin America, than in Northern Europe.

Define seriously injured. At one of our coed games a couple of years ago a guy broke his leg after running into the keeper, I didn't see how it happened but it was nasty. I sprained my seriously and holy crap did it feel like I was going to pass out, it hurt like hell. Speed is a little relative, in pro soccer those guys are frequently going in an all out sprint, it looks a lot slower on TV than it is in the field. Granted ice hockey is obviously faster, no doubt, but you guys wear all that little girl protection :)

I'm enjoying the World Cup but I have to agree that the 'writhing in agony' performances are disgusting. Considering that not all players do it I think that those that do should get an automatic yellow card for their 'performance' if the contact was anything less than substantial. My alternative suggestion is that if a player insists on putting on a show then the opposing player (who's already got a penalty against him) has the right to make good on his efforts and put the boot in properly.
If you don't know where you're going then ... you must belong in Project Management.

Coach Sommer has some great material, I've been meaning to get his book and a set of the rings he sells for a while now. I was active on a forum that he posts on a while ago and he was always very helpful when answering questions.

It's from a guy that is more geared towards Floreio than traditional gymnastics so there are some different progressions and moves.

One of the hard parts about the pistol and squats in general is building up the ankle mobility to do hold the low position. I've found that standing on a slope facing downhill reduces the amount of flexibility required. I just do it for static holds, but I've found it helpful for improving the full flat ground version. I realize that if I did the slopped version as the primary exercise, I'd probably get a muscle imbalance and hurt myself, so I only do it to help with plateaus and the like. I've also been doing static holds in the low position in a 2 foot deep pool when I take my 3 year old to the pool.

Psst...you know you can buy rings anywhere right? :) I bought a pair for a really good price after hunting around online and they're excellent.
