The point of martial arts in general is to provide smaller/weaker people with the skills and confidence they need to stand a chance against bigger or more threatening opponents. That said, I have no experience at all with kung fu (outside of seeing the odd kung fu movie), so I can't say anything as to the particular style. In a match of two kung fu fighters (be honest, how many of you just heard that song in your head?), in which two fighters of vastly diverse weight/strength face off using the same foundation of skills, I think the heavier fellow has a good probability of winning just because he probably has better endurance. In other styles, like Judo or Aikido, it's a bit easier to use an opponent's weight against them, so I doubt weight is as much of an advantage there.

This is actually a common misconception. Kung fu is not the martial art - like many, I experimented with different martial arts (I started off with Wushu; particularly Chang Chuan) and Wushu is the martial aspect. Kung fu very roughly translates to "time and energy" and can relate to any discipline that takes time and effort to learn, e.g. piano. There are many styles of Wushu.

Unlike Americans, here in the UK, we don't measure the size of our penis by the size of our guns. We're secure enough in our manhood not to need to use firearms. Firearms don't make you more virile; it's a Phallusy.

Skill is important when you have the strength to utilize it. At 120lbs you should be able to trounce someone at 200lbs with no skill and just muscle. However, you will most people have some self defense skills. No matter how skilled you are in a given martial art you will find there is always someone much more skilled so the best lesson in all of martial arts is always to avoid a fight at all costs and give you the ability to disable or disarm an opponent for the times you can't avoid the fight.

It's the most important lesson you're taught. The fight portion, outside of the discipline of the school, is truly a last resort.

just a random thought - I think on average Kung Fu don't work, at least for the avg 120 skinny. The body builder with 180lbs of muscle always (well almost) win I think Kung Fu is overrated (no offense and me no exopert), or am i mistaken?

Well, actual strength and overall muscle mass do not directly correlate, so will you may be huge you might not be a strong as a smaller guy. For example, in the Worlds Strongest Man competition things there are some huge-huge guys and some regular-huge guys but their huge-huge guy's extra muscle mass may not actually give them that much of an advantage at all. Also, as for martial arts and skill vs raw strength remember that Force = Mass x Acceleration and it's not that difficult to outweigh extra mass with acceleration, so a lighter faster person may actually be able to hit harder. Of course if you get in a situation where the stronger guy grabs the martial artist then I don't suppose it matters how fast you are, you're probably going to get flattened!

My current favourite quote is: Punch them in the face, see what happens!

The size of your penis has nothing to do with it. If I could kill someone at 100 yards with my penis, I wouldn't need a gun. :)

I took Karate from a ~135lbs female about a decade back. We sparred a few times and I'm pretty sure she'd kick the crap out of my 220lbs. She could put a solid block on pretty much anything I threw at her, and the time we worked with kicking and punching the heavy bag, she was able to put quite a bit more power in to it than anyone there. So yes, it makes you a better fighter. Now ~135lb black belt vs a 220lb black belt, I'd put my money on the big guy.

I wouldn't put money on the either. One may be bigger but if the smaller one is skilled and knows how to use his size effectively, and just as important, use his opponents size against him, it would be an even bet.

just a random thought - I think on average Kung Fu don't work, at least for the avg 120 skinny. The body builder with 180lbs of muscle always (well almost) win I think Kung Fu is overrated (no offense and me no exopert), or am i mistaken?

Hitting is like any sports related skill. It's a complex motion that has to be learned like anything else. Avoiding getting hit is even harder. All things being equal being stronger gives you a big advantage though. However, there are at least 3 different kinds of strength: maximal, explosive, endurance. How hard you can punch depends on what kinds of strength you have throughout your body; Roughly 60% of the force comes from core and legs, 40% from your upper body. Your speed is governed by practice, and learning to keep a clear head makes a huge difference. So, when it comes down to it, when you fight you never know what is going to happen. Anyone can get a lucky shot in and when one of those connects you are toast. The more you learn about fighting the less you want to do it for real, especially when you throw guns and knives into the mix.

This is actually a common misconception. Kung fu is not the martial art - like many, I experimented with different martial arts (I started off with Wushu; particularly Chang Chuan) and Wushu is the martial aspect. Kung fu very roughly translates to "time and energy" and can relate to any discipline that takes time and effort to learn, e.g. piano. There are many styles of Wushu.

sounds like the whole "evolution is xyz ... no! It's abc" argument when we all know that when scientists, media, what-not are talking "evolution" they mean a specific thing. Likewise, your statement about Kung Fu, while it may be "true", really serves to confuse the subject. When it's clear that when most western people speak of Kung Fu they're talking of that thing that Bruce Lee[^] was famous for doing.
