Dangerous Roads (UK)

The West Midlands is where it's at. We get the best of both worlds close enough to the South to have an emotional side which the ladies love, yet North enough for a hard nut exterior. And luck for me I'm from just far enough away from Birmingham and the Black Country to avoid that god awful accent

Are you talking about the midlands as a whole? Or have you specifically selected Coventry? Sounds spot on, and I wouldn't change a thing. Except perhaps get the Sky Blues promoted back to where they belong :)

Have you ever tried getting across London? It average 4 miles an hour at peak times. Do you remember Clarkson driving the marathon route and getting there after the runner?

Many, many years ago I took two friends to Gatwick Airport from the extreme north of London early one Sunday morning. Door to drop-off 45 minutes: Route - straight through the city onto A23. Transport - this[^]. As I said, it was many, many years ago.

Take away crumple zones, airbags, impact bars, etc. -- in fact, position the driver at the very front, in front of the engine, with only glass for protection -- and suddenly *all* roads will become safe.

No need for such extreme measures. A simple 18" spike protruding from the centre of the steering wheel would do it.

See Here[^]. I notice 9 of the 10 most dangerous roads are in t'North. I suspect that the roads are not dangerous, it is the fact that Northerners can't drive. After all it has only been a generation since they all work'd int'mill, barefoot, and the only form of transport were a whippet.

The most dangerous ones are mostly in and around the Peak District and Pennines - the roads are out in the wilds, mainly bordered by unyeilding dry stone walls, with many tight bends, culverts, trees and rocky outcrops etc. Road conditions, especially in the winter, can be horrendous. The vast majority of the casualties are bikers who let rip with the throtle when they get out in the countryside, knowing that there are unlikely to be many police cars in the vicinity. The remoteness of the area also means that emergency service response times are greater, but the chances of an accident being spotted by another road user who can help or even just report it are lower.

Watford Gap? Really? I live in Nuneaton, which I believe is north of Watford Gap, yet in the heart of the Midlands. Definately not in the north.
