Despite what you see in American films, entrapment is allowed in the UK (e.g. to catch shopkeepers selling fireworks to minors). As long as the officer doesn't actually encourage the offence, it is not deemed to be entrapment.

Fair enough, maybe 'entrapment' isn't the correct word. But take normal speed cameras for example. They have to be yellow, there has to be signs etc. But with these new cameras, they just seem to set up a camera that doesn't stand out, situate it away from the van down the road and all is hunky dory.

So? Just don't break the speed limit! This is total hearsay and could be utterly wrong, but I heard that in New Zealand speed cameras are hidden as a matter of course, and it's done a lot to bring down traffic speed.

So you've never ever gone over the speed limit? I'm not saying that I blat everywhere at 100mph - far from it. I never go above 80mph, and most of the time I stick to 70-75mph. But, sometimes you need to go faster than the limit. Sometimes you need to overtake someone to get out the way of a lorry - or get away from the blind spot. Sometimes you need to make way so that the people coming on to the motorway can get on. And its at those times that you can get caught by these cameras.

So you've never ever gone over the speed limit? I'm not saying that I blat everywhere at 100mph - far from it. I never go above 80mph, and most of the time I stick to 70-75mph. But, sometimes you need to go faster than the limit. Sometimes you need to overtake someone to get out the way of a lorry - or get away from the blind spot. Sometimes you need to make way so that the people coming on to the motorway can get on. And its at those times that you can get caught by these cameras.

Well, not sure what we (in the US) call entrapment, but I commute 75 miles, one way, to work through some very well known "speed traps". Now, some of the cop cars are plainly marked, though most of the time "hidden" from view until it's to late. But, there are several "plain, unmarked" cars and SUV's that routinely sit in hiding. I actually was sitting next to one at a red light, I glanced over at it, but it was so well hidden, as far as markings go, I had no clue. So, how do I know it was police? Easy. The cross traffic light turned yellow then red, but 1 poor gent decided to run it, and rearended the lady who was stopped. As soon as it happened, that car next to me lit up like a red and blue christmas tree...and so did the same type car that was behind him. Two toally unmarked police cars, who had a front row seat for that accident. Thankfully, I carry a radar detector in my vehicle at all times, and it has saved me numerous times.

What? As a rule of thumb it's better to avoid getting into trouble in the first place than having to accelerate excessively to get out of it.

No shit - but sometimes you don't get yourself into dangerous situations, others put you in dangerous situations; their are dicks on the road too, sometimes using speed can help you. I'll give you a classic example, and this actually happened I'm not making this up. My fiancées mother was driving home, she approached a quiet crossroads with a set of traffic lights - doing the speed limit. A lorry came steaming up behind her flashing his lights furiously, she had to speed up to get through the lights as the lorry couldn't stop in time. If she had stayed where she was it could have been game over. It wasn't her fault, she hadn't put herself in any undue danger, yes the lorry driver was a dick, but that doesn't change the fact that if she hadn't have sped then it would have been a big accident. If you feel safe that you will NEVER need to use speed to get out of any situation, then go ahead and get a speed limiter fitted. (Ohh, and BTW, I have never had an accident, never caused an accident and never been caught speeding - before you think that maybe I'm some sort of mad driving nut bag who doesn't care for anyone's safety. I drive nearly 200 miles every day to and from work and see these sorts of things all the time on motorways).
