So time to change my mythology....

Someone else started naming their computers after Greek Gods/Goddesses and Hyperion got hit today with "same name on the network) bit.... well, I figured it had to happen eventually... so I am finally jumping ship to a new naming scheme... Aztec/Maya/Inca. I figured unless we get a 2012 obsessed person in here, they are not likely to think of Adawulcanak or Tliewatuwadjigican. Oh someone might, maybe, possibly think of Quetzalcoatl, but there is no way they are spelling it without a google, so chances are it won't be worth trying. :) I lasted 4 years naming machines from Greek Gods. :) Not too bad. :) Think I can last at least 4 years with Aztec/Maya/Inca Mythological names? :-D

Use the names of objects in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter.

We had a sysadmin who used to name her servers with Gangster's names. We had Capone, Dillinger, etc. The best ones were a set of replicated machines called, what else, Bonnie and Clyde.

What about naming them after beers of the world? There are more than enough to last you decades.

If it weren't for networks, I'd never name my computers. Do you name your toothbrush too? But since I have to, I'm a bit more literal minded. The quad core computer is Quad, the dual core computer is Dual. Back when 450 MHz was fast, that system was named Zippy (slight nod towards the pinhead) and when I only had two, they were Calvin and Hobbes. The game machine was Gameboy and the music jukebox was Seaburg. We were equally inventive with names for the cats. Big kitty, Little kitty, Stripe, Black & White kitty, and Holy Moley (she had a black spot on her white chin that made us think of a mole).

I have used the names of the elements, matching the atomic number to the last part of the IP address.

I know of some sysadmin who use the names of the Sith for their windows servers and character from The Loard of the Rings for their Linux servers. The server room is called "The Shire"

The naming scheme in my office is from characters in the Twin Peaks TV show which has the advantage that each PC has 2 initials. Since I've never seen Twin Peaks (I'm UK based) I tried to surreptitiously switch us over to star constellations, but unfortunately the boss has other ideas.

I name them after dog breeds and add a number. Beagle_1, Beagle_2, Shepard_1,etc. They are easy to spell, remember and organize. Today I need to upgrade some Beagles, tomorrow I will work on the Terriers. Not as cool as Aztecs, I admit.

When networks were new, and we started our first, they used the name of planets. The first node was Mars, and we had Jupiter, etc. However, we never did get to all 9 ... I was really looking forward to telling people they could find their data on Uranus!
Don't you mean all 8? Or do you still think Pluto's a planet?

This was a LONG time ago, when Pluto was still a planet. :)

We used our surnames first, then planets and stars, but lately I developed a new naming scheme for my small business. It is really less funny that the old schemes but much helpful and more professional -ish. I have written down the whole story and scheme details here: http://my.opera.com/Tringi/blog/computer-naming-scheme

I started naming Windows systems after Sumerian/Babylonian deities: Enlil, Enki, Ninlil, Ninkasi. Now that I have a FreeBSD system, I named it Libertas -- so I guess I'll go with a Roman pantheon as I bring up more Unix systems.

At work we have named the computers after colours. The list goes on forever it seems but has also proven beneficial for my spelling of colours. Amethyst or Scarlet anyone. Also, if we have a machine with virtuals we use related colours. For example, Grey hosts: smoke, slate, ect.

On my network at home, I'm using the names of terminal diseases. :) Ebola, Massa, Pox, Cancer, Gherigs, etc...

I use bits of song titles from the 80s or 90s - started with naming a dev server "Hammertime" (no-one else had any reason to use it, so "u-can't-touch-this") and itslikethat and halfwaythere followed along. I had quite a few names lined up at one point. At present "iwontdothat" won't - its off, although Hammertime is also stopped so a name doesn't guarantee character.

We tried to be clever with names that were like bad jokes. We had a private printer for our team, and the share was password protected. To connect to the printer you entered "NET USE \\paddy\giveadog abone". Our lab manager was especially evil, and he used to drop files for us on his machine named "Whack". So the URL was usually something like "\\whack\whack\whack\..." And if those doesn't make any sense to you, then you should know that we usually pronounce "\" as "whack".

We recently had to do the same and because we have so many systems (thousands) it was tough to find some method that afforded a large list of values but in the end a creative co-worker came up with the answer, unaddressed/unresolved plot points from the TV Show LOST. We quickly realized we could network the entire planet and still not run out of possible names. This naming convention also gave all of us, serious fans of tyhe show, a subtle but effective way to vent our frustration with the shows writers/producers; Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse. We also felt it only applicable to honor these 2 guys in our LOST domain and so we also have 2 servers DAMON_1 and CUSE_1, both of which are for dumpoing crap that no one knows what the files are for but we're afraid to delete them in case there is ever an audit.
