 VS 2010 rocks my world. I'm sure an inventive entreprenuer could use a 'square-peg hammer' to get XCode into VS.

You wouldn't say that if you'd had to work with its innards.

The basic issue is that compared to VS, things like the debugger just plain suck. Don't get me started on how XCode opens window after window and you end up having trouble figuring out which window has the bit you want to use. Then there's Objective C, C++'s retarded half brother. And the seperate tool for creating UIs, which is also far more complex than it needs to be.

I've never had to work with its innards, but I have on a few occassions tried anyway. :~ Uglier than a baoon's arse. However, I believe 2010 is at least a small bit prettier.

Opens multiple windows? You have enabled the embedded editor? Then there's one editor window which I don't find too bad. The one thing that bugs me more than anything at the moment is PageUp and PageDown. Why doesn't the caret move as well?!? Grrr!!! I'm better now. Oh, and create your UI's manually and skip interface builder. You'll thank me later :)

The VS2010 automation interfaces are quite thoroughly broken in key areas. It's like VS2005 all over again (in fact, one of the bugs I found yesterday was one which was also present in VS2005 but had been fixed in VS2008. That's just poor quality control, IMHO). Most of those regressions seem to be due to MS trying to "pretty" it up by replacing the code editor with a WPF implementation (whcih coincidentally makes the thing even most sluggish and less responsive than it's predecessor, for very littel gian). Between that and the new .vcxproj file format I've been quite happy to throw the bl**dy thing at the nearest wall since the abortion which was VS2010 Beta 1. Even MS have acknowledged that it's "not finished, but we're shipping it anyway".

XCode 4 may be an improvement[^] - it's meant to offer a single-window environment, a new debugger based on work that's been done with LLVM (so it's not GDB *AT ALL*)...

Java, Basic, who cares - it's all a bunch of tree-hugging hippy cr*p CodeProject MVP for 2010 - who'd'a thunk it!

I do that. :-O using 80/20, and because I don't write embedded code. Most VS users don't need extensions, but just a standard IDE, and the 'plain' 2010 IDE features of 2010 really do outweigh the extensibility.

So, I'm working on something for the iPad. I need to get some images in to my assembly. They are not showing up in the app, and based on past experience, I can't tell if that's because the app almost never updates in the emulator when you do a build, or if something else is wrong. It's an exercise in frustration. I think I worked it out. You can set your active executable and your active build. So I was building one version and deploying the other. Not sure how that makes sense....

Not sure I agree. PgUp/Dn almost never puts the cursor on the right line anyway; meanwhile leaving it in place would allow me to jump back to where I was after scrolling the source to look at something else in more detail. I've never used XCode though so it's possible I'd end up swearing at its implementation more than the current one.
