He didn't delay - he canceled and waited three years in the vain hope that he could turn things around enough to win - a hopeless ambition in his case.

Who cares if he does think that, as long as he doesn't force it on SA's HIV patients? He has activley supported proper anti-HIV programs much more than Mbeki ever did.

I can compare any human being on the planet to any other. For example, "Hey, look, they both have two arms. They must be alike!" Comparing Churchill to Hitler, which can have no motivation other than attempting to diminish the former, is insulting - both to his memory and to the greatness of England and her people, who demonstrated epic resilience where many other nations would have faltered.

I was objectively comparing an aspect of Hitler to an aspect of Churchill, not their whole beings.

Did you know Churchill was the only commoner given a state funeral?

Where I come from all things 'state' are reserved for 'commoners', e.g. hospitals etc. The elite are exempt from anything 'state'.

Certainly not in the context of a middle-aged, unfit man who got up, fists flying, against a bunch of yobs who were rude to his wife. Snivelling little farts like cameron would run away and cry for mummy. Would I rather my country were run by a man who stands up for decency -- with his fists, if necessary -- or a man who stands up only to wheedle to the City and the US? Not such a tough choice.

China? China was completely devastated, and their armies were next to useless. Russia was first to Berlin, and would have invaded Japan within a few months, if the bomb hadn't been dropped (which was large part of the reason for dropping it).

Churchill stood for the freedom of Britain, and perhaps Europe as well. His ideas about freedom and self-rule did not extend to the British colonies in Asia, Africa, and America then, aka non-whites.

Yep. And Thomas Jefferson owned slaves. Never saw fit to give them up. People are imperfect but those imperfections don't negate their accomlishments, nor strip them of their ability to inspire others to ever greater heights. The trendy thing for the past couple of decades has been to rebel against the concept of heroes and inspirational figures. Movies aren't allowed to have happy endings. Lead characters have their flaws highlighted and their heroic aspects diminished, as it's deemed more important to show how humanly screwed up they are than their ability to accomplish good and show others the possibilities in life. If you expect people to be without flaw before you can be inspired by their example, yours will be a bleak and dismal existance. And there's a lot of that going around these days. :)

No, I didn't, but I find it quite fitting for a man who inspired and defended commoners and aristocrats alike through their darkest hours.

Refering to Churchill, I have read that he favoured 'removing' mentally handicapped people from society, and he shared many of Hitler's leadership and warrior strengths.

What's often not written about Churchill (and I only found this out from my grandma) was that he was hated by large portions to of the UK population, especially in the north. This doesn't make it into the history books for some reason (and obviously wasn't mentioned at he time). I'm not sure why this was, despite his faults, Churchill pretty much saved Britain and by extension Europe.

Exactly, but his political actions (vs. private life) seem to have spoken louder than his words for the country. We have not yet descended into the banana republic most Saffers living in Pert expected, and the outlook for SA as an African powerhouse and emerging new world state, vs. third world, is pretty good. Most people I know that can put their racism aside are also pretty happy with Uncle Jake's leadership.
