Burn Quran Day
-
You may have heard about it on the news, otherwise go google. IMO this is just provocation. OTOH, a book is just a stack of paper with letters on it - I wouldn't RAGEQUIT* if a group of people decided to burn "On the Origin of Species" or "The God Delusion", I'd simply laugh at their barbaric behaviour and consider them to have lost "whatever it is they were trying win". IOW, it shouldn't have a provoking effect. (do I get points for starting nearly every sentence with an acronym?) * out of life. i.e, become a suicide terrorist. Discuss.

Er, yes.

Neither would any other sensible person but, when it comes to islam (equally applies to [insert name of religion]), sense appears to go out of the window. Personally think it's a waste of time but they are allowed to express themselves - a freedom they would be denied in any muslim country. It is just a book, after all, nothing more.

Why stop at the Koran. Bible, Torah, Bhagavad Gita, Book of the Dead, Harry Potter...they can all go on the bonfire!

Because your interest in those books is based on a rational thought not blind faith.

When I lived out in the country I would get rid of old books and papers by burning them. Not a big deal when the intent of burning has nothing to do with religious views or hate, but a way to get rid of them like a brush pile. Besides it saved me a lot of trash can space. I just put the ashes in the garden as fertilizer. Ash adds great amounts of trace minerals and potash.

Yep, and odds are I'm going to have to beat a friend or two with a stick to get the point across that pissing in someone's cheerios isn't the best way to prove you're better than they are. Blind hatred is as useless and destructive as blind faith, but apparently actually looking is really hard.

As a child my parents would bring me to church and try to make me religious, but then I read books that were not written by bronze age goat herders. I realised that the bible, and all religious texts, were providing answers for ignorance. But today we know the answers, there is no god of rainbows, there is no creationism, it is all bunkum and people who need the crutch of religion do so because they have been brainwashed by their parents. Teaching children religion is abuse. I saw the light, and it was science and maths, reason and argument, debate and reality, not bollocks and bells and smells, not ancient scripture written before refrigerators and computers, not hokum designed to create power and wealth for the elite.

Religion isn't all bad... * It scares people into being civilized by giving "evil" acts greater perceived consequences ("Hell") than the legal system can provide. Umm... I'm trying to think of another advantage to religion, but the rest of my ideas just don't work... I figured maybe it encouraged people to become literate, but I don't think most of them actually READ their "holy" texts, since some guy will teach them verbally once a week. Wait! I got a few more! * Inspires some nice music and fairy tales... Granted, if not for religion, other things would have inspired equally-nice music and fairy tales. * Provides useful expletives and insults, such as "goddamn" and "go to hell" Ok, that's all I can think of right now.
Proud to have finally moved to the A-Ark. Which one are you in?

Well yeah, but it's not ALL bad... Like I said, there are a few redeeming qualities. Not many, but a few. One of these days, I need to read the bible, just to see what the big deal is... I mean, it's pretty much the #1 bestselling novel of all time, right?

I think that's Harry Potter. :-) Anyway, it's a series of short, badly told narratives written by desert dwelling camel shaggers who knew no better: hardly worth reading unless you like lots of begets and begats though I prefer a nice tuna baguette.

Hey, there's gotta be SOMETHING in there worth reading, if it's been this popular for over 2000 years. Sure, I'm not expecting Shakespeare or Chaucer by any stretch, but I figure it has to at least have a little character development, right?
