Teaching children religion is abuse. I saw the light, and it was science and maths, reason and argument, debate and reality, not bollocks and bells and smells, not ancient scripture written before refrigerators and computers, not hokum designed to create power and wealth for the elite.

Religion isn't all bad... * It scares people into being civilized by giving "evil" acts greater perceived consequences ("Hell") than the legal system can provide. Umm... I'm trying to think of another advantage to religion, but the rest of my ideas just don't work... I figured maybe it encouraged people to become literate, but I don't think most of them actually READ their "holy" texts, since some guy will teach them verbally once a week. Wait! I got a few more! * Inspires some nice music and fairy tales... Granted, if not for religion, other things would have inspired equally-nice music and fairy tales. * Provides useful expletives and insults, such as "goddamn" and "go to hell" Ok, that's all I can think of right now.

You may have heard about it on the news, otherwise go google. IMO this is just provocation. OTOH, a book is just a stack of paper with letters on it - I wouldn't RAGEQUIT* if a group of people decided to burn "On the Origin of Species" or "The God Delusion", I'd simply laugh at their barbaric behaviour and consider them to have lost "whatever it is they were trying win". IOW, it shouldn't have a provoking effect. (do I get points for starting nearly every sentence with an acronym?) * out of life. i.e, become a suicide terrorist. Discuss.

Look at any book by Dan Brown - they're popular but you wouldn't want to read one. Besides, who gives a toss about something that happened 2000 years ago in the desert? How does that relate to contemporary life? How do I reconcile what I read in the bible (or any religious tome) with real life now? It's risible, at best; my life so reflects what some ancient person who lived 25 years did in a tent in the desert. Only an insane lunatic would buy into such drivel. I could go on but that would be as boring as a Dan Brown novel. Or the bible.
