Chernobyl zone shows decline in biodiversity[^] In other news, scientists confirm that the sky is definitely blue

I for one am surprised, I would have expected all the mutations caused by the radiation to widen the biodiversity. Maybe the mutants are just not viable.

Yes, they confirm; because many "skeptics" don't believe so (read in the article the part about a scientist called Gashchak).

No! In the other new, scientists realized why the sky appears to be blue when in fact it is not.

IIRC from Biology class, mutations happen all the time, and most are not viable. Radiation exposure merely accelerates the pace of mutation, and does nothing to improve the odds of survival.

Oh yeah, Mr. I-Know-It-All, could you please sit down for 30 minutes with our puny so-called "scientists" to catapult us all into the 23rd century?

Still that means acceleration - and asthe recent millions of years show, the trend is towards biodiversity. OTOH 24 years are noise compared to the history of life, and biodiversity seems to increase in jumps - when for whatever reason new niches open up. Still still, moderately increased radiation doesn't need to increased mutation, apparently, there are some mechanisms to adjust "repair rate". Friggin' complex, I say.

You assume correctly. Grey, dull, wet looking. Normal Welsh summer, really. You don't so much tan here as rust...

Wasnt radiation supposed to cause random mutation and adaptation of species?

True, I would be surprised if much really survives radiation

It should be all colors but blue. I mean, if it keeps all the colors, and reflects the blue, then it can't be blue, right?
