If he's confident in his ability to find another job, he should "man up" and take charge of his own life. If he'd not confident in his ability to find another job, he should "man up" and deal with it. Either way, "man up" is the right answer.

"The staggering layers of obscenity in your statement make it a work of art on so many levels." - J. Jystad, 2001I agree, the OP should take charge of the situation and either get a new job or sort their current one out. All of the suggestions are saying pretty much the same thing, but there are helpful and unhelpful ways of saying it. The problem is the OP is pretty obviously either depressed or suffering from anxiety, or at least starting to suffer from one of these (the "unexplained" neck pains are a classic symptom). In either case the worst thing anyone can do is imply weakness, it only adds to the problem. Unless you have actually been like this you cannot understand how it effects you it totally changes how you think. Its a bit like grief when a close family member of a friend dies. Unless it has happened to you too, you know what being sad is, but grief is on a whole different scale. My point 2 against pompeyboy's post still stands BTW, it is less manly to just take any c**p your boss throws at you. "Manning up" like this is just a form of self-justification.

Hi group, I hope some of you guys can help me in dealing the tougher condition I am facing. I am working a very small scale company which has a man power of 10. Out of that we have only 3 developers including myself. Since last year, due to recession company started facing tougher times and it brought very tough measures from the management. There are some job cuts in the company. Management can not tolerate any project delays. So we are asked to prepare the tight estimates for the coming project and we have to deliver the project in that tight scope. Preparing the estimates is difficult as there are many unknown variables. So we sometimes end up giving wrong estimates. So for execution we often spend long working day and weekends. COmpany pays bonus for every 4 months and to pay that they do lot of scrutiny. There is a review for that. Every -ve point even if its very small they blow it out of proportion and they warn bonus wont be paid next time. Even if company facing problem they tell that we dont have to worry and during work hours they are very tough to ask the question about project task completions and every now and then we are reminded of the cost of an resource involved in the project. There is no casual relationship in the company and often feel ignored. there is very less talk in the company and we often speak on messenger. ALl this is causing lot of anxiety to me all the time. Mind is not free of -ve thoughts. I get stiff neck all the time and there is always heavy thoughts when I go home until I sleep. Morning same cycle continues. Even on weekend we end up doing some work. so it looks liek there is no escape. Its causing great harm to my self esteem as there is lot of negativity and worried about health. Company is looking for a bigger project but not sure if we can get and even if we get those, will the working environment improve. So help me guys in dealing such tougher times. May be I am weak to handle the situation and ready for the criticism. Thanks Meena kumar
If you're good at your job and you're a hard worker there's no reason to beat yourself up. I ran into this on a 4 year stint where it got worse and worse...the company wasn't hurting due to a recession, but the culture was the same as you describe, rather, it grew to that. If the company gets a big new contract, are they going to fire all your management and start over? If not, it's likely your environment won't change either. There will be other motivators. I ended up taking 2 months off and spent time with my family. It was tight for cash, but I found a better job in the long run - with a little less pay - and we were far better off for it. Cheers.

I think what has happened is even though your company is struggling, you have got into a sort of comfort zone and are not able to pull yourself to move out. Start giving a few interviews to gain some confidence (you will most likely be rejected initially but remember you will be learning through every interview). Eventually, you will get a new job and will be able to move out of this situation.

I dont feel that enthusiasm of learning and grasping things and be full of information. Have I grown old? or do I need some excercise? I go home in the evening them my thoughts are just into my work there too i change the mood after one and half hour or soo then again in the morning after I come to office i am unable to switch my mood. Back when I graduated school my first job was for a gasoline jobber (managing multiple gas stations). The boss was a bigoted, egotistical, and abusive boss. Deadlines were tight, expectations were high, and hours were long, praise was absent, insults were common. I got depressed, but finally decided to get out. When word got back, given the boss was well connected in town, he put the word out on the street not to hire me. I felt trapped, more depressed. But damned if I was going to let this happen! I decided to jump ship, not without a job, but jump from accounting to other areas. I started training myself to take a new job, new area, still programming, but now engineering, UI work, and scientific analysis. My longest hours were over 90 hours in one week. ouch. I left, the boss tried to replace me, couldn't even with two new programmers, the company went under. But I was already elsewhere. :) I won't say here is always perfect, but it beats my previous job, and getting better now without CLK. :)

There are thousands like you here and companies (specially small ones) are exploiting them. As far as my experience with people coming from these kind of
slums
:~ concerns they get a salary around INR 10 ~ 15k / month, don't have much of knowledge -at least believe that they are useless and are not fit for clearing any interview- and are just dragging themselves blaming the company and what do they want to achieve with that is "this all is companies fault and not mine". And in Delhi a usual autowala earns more than INR 30k / month, so go and get a life - you are simply wasting yours here. My first suggestion will be to give the resignation as soon as you enter you jail / concentration camp next time. Do anything what you feel you can do. I know initially the time will be though but soon you will be able to do something better with yourself. And yes stay away from all those so called friends of yours who are just wasting your time/money and keeping you from doing anything good with yourself. -
Recent research has shown that the degree of control you have over your decisions directly influences your satisfaction. So here are some hints for being a dev: 1) There is no such thing as a tight development deadline; only an accurate one and an inaccurate one. Keep track of your personal estimates, especially if you continually meet them. Even in tough times managers prefer dead-accurate time lines over an unrealistic one. Good estimates builds lots of credibility. 2) See the situation as an opportunity. Working under deadlines is the best way to become a good developer; just don't take short-cuts. 3) Don't think about work at home; it isn't allowed. As a developer you probably don't own the company and have zero potential for real advancement so there is no point in taking your troubles home. Go home, do anything else but worry about work 4) You are a resource. All developers are and companies may pretend to care but they don't. When there is no project, there is no job ... period. Develop a strong social network outside of work so you don't care so much at work that no one cares. 5) Play kids at chess. It's nice to have a victory some days.

Its not true at all, in such slums u get a knowledge from the base level, learn client interaction, u r the person responsible for analysis, coding, designing, testing, delivering software, give support to them.

Its true at all but i need to say here one thing if you have the confidence you can get any job you want so in such situation boost your confidence. Dont think if your friend is working in MNC have a very good knowledge. Currently i m working in MNC the guys working around me dont have the basic knowlege of css writing. They only know .Net coding...Starting from there career they are only in maintainace.

I think its biggest mistake you can do, If you leave your current job without getting another job. No one give you the job if you are not currently working.

One thing know for sure is that what these developers can do best is to create small projects quickly with an average quality - and there is a really huge market, looking for this kind of stuff - yes I want to say that going independent is the way forward. Rest is his choice as everybody have his own unique scenario. If Roadside business is a solution, I say his/her education was a waste. I strongly recommend Try in your field, don't give up until you will get success... I think you are try to disgrade his/her confidence. If you got a right job at the start of your career its your fate. But one day this person will also get a good job.
