Alfred gave hearing to his people. He created the Democracy in Europe. He formulated the Royal Navy. He beat Guthram at Headingly. He created local courts that heard in his name. He defeated Vikings. He showed how useless Agas were.

I guess you were down-voted by Aga lovers. I wonder why you were down-voted: perfectly innocuous post.

He was famous for Burning the Cakes, but the only reason I mentioned it at all was I was watching a programme about him, very interesting it was too.

Ethelred? Or Ethelmere or Ethelstan or something like that? I know he stayed and ruled the Danelaw. (Which, incidentally ended (as in border not time) about 1 mile from my house).

There's quite a good program on the Normans showing (on BBC2 I think) at the moment called, oddly enough, The Normans[^], if you're also interested in that kind of thing.

Oh yes, it was the center of the Hat Industry (Why the local team is called The Hatters). It was also a major market town and one of the first to get a train station from London. Home to Vauxhall Motors for 100 years, although they have gone now. And Home to Whitbread Brewery too.

Have you even been to Dunstable? It is a Ghost Town. What shops that are open are of the Poundland/Charity variety. It doesn't have a cinema and the nightclubs are in an old shopping precint. It really is the Land of the Living Dead. They have a nice shiney ASDA, but let's face it, ASDA is a bit downmarket, (I prefer Sainsburys myself, and that's only because Luton doesn't have a Waitrose).

To be honest I rarely venture outside the M25 unless it's to get to an airport to leave this miserable little country for as long as I can get away with. :-)
