Hi all have planned a secret holiday for the me and the woman - well ok its a secret for her though i think she suspects where we're going Anyway We'll be in NYC from 11th Oct for a few days then to DC then back to NYC am looking for suggestions of stuff to do - also shes a (kids) writer so any suggestions of book type writing type events etc writing seminars etc would be well cool Bryce

I am planning on being there around that time, actually. That is, I have to spend all of Oct in the US, and I am insisting on getting to NYC at some point. I assume I'll see the Empire State, the Statue, what else is there ?

I suggest you pencil in a couple of half-days at MOMA - Museum of Modern Art. The reason for a couple of half-days is that there's just so much there that will blow your socks off, so after not many hours your brain needs a rest. Enjoy, you lucky b*st*rd!

In D.C. I would definitely recommend the Smithsonian there's(I think) 16 buildings and anything you can imagine is on display in one building or another. If you had a month it would not be enough time. My favorite was the Aeronautic and Space! N.Y. is just as awesome but didn't have the same amount of time to sight see there so I have limited knowledge of NYC. Enjoy

the Metropolitan Museum Of Art is great (but HUGE). MOMA is good. American Museum of Natural History, too. the Empire State Building is fun. a Broadway show is always a good time. a trip down to Wall St, "ground zero", etc. can be worth the trip. it's all typical tourist stuff, but still, fun. if you're feeling adventurous, there are lots of good places to eat in Greenwich Village and Chelsea.

For NYC, your best bet is to take one of these on-off bus tours. For DC, just hang around the Mall.

Oh, I missed that you said DC. The white house is OK to see, but nothing special, I mean, you recognise it from it blowing up in ID4, but you can't get close or anything. I loved the WWII and Vietnam memorials, the big needle thing, and the massive statue of Lincoln ( the one Clint Eastwood feeds pigeons from in In the line of fire ). The Smithsonian is awesome, give yourself lots of time, b/c you will need it ( as someone else said ).

Last time I went I had a guide and I would tell her what I wanted to see and she would take me to where it was. Cut a lot of wondering around time out. She was also a volunteer at the local zoo so I got the inside track there also, neat place as well.

Since no one has recommended it try the "Statue of Liberty". Empire State Building and the Museum's are also good to visit.

I am planning on being there around that time, actually. That is, I have to spend all of Oct in the US, and I am insisting on getting to NYC at some point. I assume I'll see the Empire State, the Statue, what else is there ?
