Don't get excited the jury's still out on that one.

I notice that the people who post the bad jokes are the sorts of people who are inclined to put too many smilies into messages. There was a joke posted the other day (mentioning no names) that had a punch line mentioning excretion, so the poster wrote the following line of smilies afterwards: :~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~ :omg: :omg: :omg: :omg:     (Apologies but I did not count the exact number of each type of smiley) Let's just for the sake of argument interpret how the OP thinks we should read it: - I just read vulgar punch line... - :~ I feel disgusted and slightly violated while the punch line sinks in a bit... - :omg: Oh. Em. Gee. I cannot believe how sick that was... - Oh, I get it now. Ha ha! That was actually quite funny after all. I am going to tell all my friends now. Please, please, I don't need these visual clues for how to react to what people are saying. I have no issue with the occasional smiley face in a message, but the extent to which some people over use them annoys me as much as all the jokes that I first heard when I was 5. For anybody still reading, have an ironic thumbs up from me:

Don't even get me started on your lounge etiquette, Dave. Jokes as bad as yours need to be put into the punitentiary.
On the subject of annoyances, you have just demonstrated one of mine : "bolding" the attempted pun. A good pun needs no assistance for a capable reader. If they are not capable then it is unlikely that they would get it anyway. To me, this is exactly like what DD described : "It is like the Drum Sting after a bad comedian tells a joke. (Often done on Letterman to let the audience know that he had made a joke and it was time to laugh.)"

I think it's done ironically on the Letterman show. (how weird is that...my spell checker in Firefox actually highlighted letterman as not being capitalized?)

For the record, I never EVER use smilies. But I will make use of L337 once in awhile. lol, jk and ftw have been known to crop up as well. But never will you see any bad graphics posted inside, or to the side, of my text.
