HERE HERE!!! I love avast. I use it on my WHS and all my machines. I also give it to my pc clients when they don't have antivirus or their version is expiring or expired. The free edition is great and the professional is even better.

Really? My wife bought a copy and aside from the fact that it adds a firewall (already really have that built into Windows) and one or two other features, I really don't see the big advantages of the pay version. What do you find is better?

It is that time of the year again where I need to update my antivirus program. Having looked at various reviews none of which agree I am wondering if anybody has some opinions? It seems the best are (in no particular order): - Vipre - BitDefender - Kapersky

I think it's better to make a list of important factors, for example (not reducing the computer speed, good support, being up to date, the size of update patches ( for low bandwidth clients ), . . .) then arrange them according to importance. then you will find one. I use kaspersky for my whole company, it doesn't reduce the computer's speed, updates everyday, and you can set it to update every client. but according to Avira and Avast the update patch size is big. Also you can buy kis, so that it provide you the whole solution ( internet security and antivirus ). the interface is user friendly and you can set every small detail like a Network Pro.

Amen to that!! They should do away with pre installed trial software altogether, if we want a trial version of something we'll get it ourselves! It's always such a time waster... :( Ja nee, McAfee is the worst AV in existence at the moment. I'd feel safer having nothing running than having that running... really, I wouldn't be surprised if there were plenty of viruses and things that use it as a launch platform :| And I stand open to correction but in my experience Trend is also a monster fail at the moment. They unsuccessfully made a release that was 100% Vista compatible that literally drowned the OS and CPU and made it impossible to do anything more than stare at the desktop (because it was hanging). They then released a much awaited update and entirely new version which... did exactly the same thing except the version number had changed. I haven't had problems with Norton/Symantec at all as a single user but I can say that whenever this topic comes up I always hear mention of Nod and lately MSE. Also Avira but that seems to be a more European taste.

Agree about the problem with pre-installed trial software. And another vote for Symantec. It is often berated in these sorts of topics but I’ve used it for years without complaint. I use the full “Internet Security” suite on multiple machines and so far I’ve not had a reason not to like it. YMMV. However, as “someone in computers” I’ve had to do my share of random PC support for relatives, friends, friends of friends, etc. When it comes to computer security I’ve noticed this: Novice users typically don’t update their AV data files. They feel safe because they have AV software. Yes, most AV software will update itself regularly but this can be switched off. (I was once asked to switch off updates to AVG because the user didn’t like to see the notification window popup.) Without regular updates it doesn’t matter which AV software you go with. McAfee seems fine unless/until the user buggers up their subscription. Typically it’s because a newbie user entered their email address wrong or something similar. Thereafter, no more updates. Ever. Novice user sometimes switch off AV software altogether because doing so makes their computer run faster. If not running it doesn’t matter which AV software you go with. Security should be “in depth”. That means regularly applying important O/S patches, using AV software (and using it properly), getting a decent firewall, using something like Spybot S&D to protect the browser, and not opening every damned attachment that gets emailed your way. So I’m always nervous when someone asks which is the best AV. AV is only one piece of the solution, and then only is used right. (Sorry if this is obvious to everyone here, just my rant for the day.)

I used Norton for all my System and Malware tools. After the 360 products performance issues, I was bumped off the band wagon. I now use one product as the Resident Shield and several others for periodic checks. I have not found one product to be adequate for everything. They all have some infection definition patterns in common but others that differ. Some are better at Trojans or Worms than others. Some are better at rootkits. Some seem to catch new viruses better than others, etc. Scans with several products find Malware that one product alone does not. Experience has shown me that your needs can be determined by some of the following factors, at least: . What is your OS (Windows, Linux, ...) . Where are you located (USA, Europe, Asia, Down-under, ...) (the Internet is not as ubiquitous as we think) . Where does your traffic, such as email, come from primarily ( " ) . What sources does your Malware vendor use for definitions. I have some clients that are in the USA but have the bulk of their email exchanges with Overseas companies. They seem to get the new exotic Malware sooner than other companies. We tried quite a few packages and found AVG was the best for them. This may not be true for other companies that are technology oriented, perhaps developers, and have traffic concentrated in the USA or one other country. This company has a fairly independent assessment of Malware products: <a href="http://malwareresearchgroup.com/">http://malwareresearchgroup.com/</a>[<a href="http://malwareresearchgroup.com/" target="_blank" title="New Window">^</a>] Overall I use the following on a periodic basis: . Avira . BitDefender . ClamAV . Emsisoft . Malwarebytes . MSE . Spybot S&D . Spyware Doctor . StopZilla . SuperAntiSpyware . ThreatExpert Memory Scanner Malwarebytes and StopZilla seem superior for Trojans and Worms. Spyware Doctor and some others seem most comprehensive but take more CPU cycles if they are resident. I suggest some trials for your specific system. Most of the vendors above have free versions and/or trials. Don't be surprised if you find new Malware that your scanner has been missing prior to now. If you have another product that is the Rosetta stone of Malware protection please share.

It also has script blocking. So if a script is a little nasty on a website it will catch it. I do like the fact that the free edition is perfect for general users. It isn't crippleware or time limited. If you need the extra protection then you can buy it.

hmm good points i must say now back to topic fuck anti virus use a virtual pc via Virtual Box or use Sandboxie but if you really want a nice security setup you could use use MBAM - Malwarebytes - Anti Malware Comodo Firewall - Firewall AVG Free - Anti Virus you can replace avg with anything really... Comodo is good for people who actually no what they are doing and monitory all in comming and out going packets Comodo also has a anti spyware system built into the firewall and a sandbox, and with the right settings comodo also gives you a nice lil popup asking for permission before a program uses the interner or attepts to delete, duplicate, move etc a file MBAM is good for detecting all malware e.g. Worms, RATs / trojans etc AVG Free i coose this because i like the the active protection and well before i learned a lot about virus's i only used AVG and windows firewall lmao i also think that AVG has a nice and fast scanner and i find it detects a lot of common virus's

Nobody knows about Eset Nod32? I have been using it for years and, in my opinion, is far better than Panda, and Kaspersky. And it's famous for taking very little system resources to work, not as Kas. Talking about Symantec, that's just junk, only for installing it on OEM systems and add some more bucks to the price. Greetings :)

None. I haved used Anti virus at home for years. The biggest virus software is anti virus software. My work PC has no less then 12 processing running constaly on my PC that are related to the anti virus software. I hate anit virus software.

Same here. Better protection than AVG and not nearly as invasive as most security programs. :)

Same Here, been using Viper on 5-6 PC's for about a year now. XP and Win7. Not a resource hog (yet), which is a big plus. It's paid though, don't know if they have a free version. AVG is what I ran prior, but that went from a trim AV software to the same bloat-ware as everything else over a couple years period.

Kaspersky! One big thing: Kaspersky doesn't seem to have allegiance to Microsoft or any other companies. A full system scan actually shocked me by reporting all the problems with standard software from all the large software houses. Too, even though I only use the AntiVirus version (instead of the more-comprehensive Internet Security version), I have been warned about Internet sites far more often and feel I have much more browser protection than Symantec Internet Security would ever catch. I also think it runs faster than anything I've used. Friends that have used just about everything are quite happy with Kaspersky. No, I don't know if it's the best and I've certainly performed no testing but I am firmly in their corner. Thats my two cents. jimbo
