Maybe I'm just cynical, but I can't help feeling that the weapon inspectors will get there, and still find places they're not allowed to look, and it'll take another year or so to progress any further. It's all just been stalling tactics from what I can see :| -- Help me! I'm turning into a grapefruit!

And this is a surprise? It was always going to be this way. The Iraqi "parliament" was always going to make Saddam look like a dove by acting like hawks (on his orders obviously). The he comes along and overturns their decision saying "look at me, I am a man of peace". A load of stage-managed bullsh*t. Now the game of cat and mouse with the UN will begin before the shooting war starts in the Spring. I think there is zero chance of a war being avoided - the decision has already been made. The US/UK will attack next year, and if they don't have a good reason by then, then they'll conjur one up. Cynical yes, but mark my words - a second Gulf War war is already an absolute certainty.

For those who were adults with proper access to news at the time (I was in boarding school... ), can anyone please tell me why the last Gulf War was fought, but the same government was left in power, to run riot again? Why are we back in this situation 11 years on?

To put it as simply as possible: Bush likes oil Sounds rediculous, but that's pretty much all it's been about (for either of the Bushes) oh yeah, "benjymous" is written with a lower case b ;P -- Help me! I'm turning into a grapefruit!

You may be correct. I put the odds at about 20:1 for avoiding some kind of war. :( However, if (and it is obviously a BIG if) this whole thing works out peacefully and Iraq is disarmed before Saddam can wreak havoc, will any of the current Bush/Blair bashers give them any credit at all? I put the odds at about 1000:1 against. :) Mike Mullikin

Megan Forbes wrote: but the same government was left in power, to run riot again The plan was that the Iraqi people would be so upset over the sanctions and other consequences of the war that they would oust Saddam.
