Project management software
-
I'm looking for a free or very inexpensive project management tool that can be used for one project that is going to last for an extended amount of time (a couple years probably). It needs to be something like MS Project in terms of what it does and must have printable reports w/gantt charts. Any suggestions?

Is this a software project? Personally I'm not too keen on MS Project for this, I just find it difficult to keep up to date with constantly changing requirements and priorities etc. If it's only for a single user Hansoft [^] is free, it's a kind of hybrid between MS Project and an agile / scrum planning tool.
Thanks. I've received several options and I will review them. I appreciate the feedback.

Thanks for the reply. GanttProject looks promising, I will review and see if it will meet my needs. -Matt Gullett

Excel? :)
The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything it's too late to stop reading it. My latest tip/trick Visit the Hindi forum here.
Actually, we usually do use Excel, but this project is a little too demanding for that.

I have used this http://www.axosoft.com/ontime[^] At the time they had a free/single use version. It's an excellent tool.
Everything makes sense in someone's mind
Thanks. I appreciate the feedback.

While I was reading your post, the CP showed me an ad of a "BEST SOFTWARE PROJECT MANAGEMENT TOOL" (The Code Project members choice award winner - 2009, 2010) with 3 free users and 45 day team trial. http://www.countersoft.com/home.aspx[^] Cheers!
Looks promising. I will be reviewing this along with the other suggestions I've received to see what may work for my needs. I appreciate your assistance. -Matt Gullett

With the 'help' of such a software your project will last far more.

Very often Excel actually is better than building a tool of one's own. If you can get MOSS and Excel to work, you can have a good management tool. But then again, getting licenses for everything is going to be as costly as buying a tool from outside (if not more). :sigh:

OpenProj is a free OpenSource knock-off of MS Project. I've never used it, but I have seen plenty of people talk about it and demo it. http://openproj.org/ Hope that helps, Wauna
