I'm looking for a free or very inexpensive project management tool that can be used for one project that is going to last for an extended amount of time (a couple years probably). It needs to be something like MS Project in terms of what it does and must have printable reports w/gantt charts. Any suggestions?

Actually, we usually do use Excel, but this project is a little too demanding for that.

Very often Excel actually is better than building a tool of one's own. If you can get MOSS and Excel to work, you can have a good management tool. But then again, getting licenses for everything is going to be as costly as buying a tool from outside (if not more). :sigh:

Is this a software project? Personally I'm not too keen on MS Project for this, I just find it difficult to keep up to date with constantly changing requirements and priorities etc. If it's only for a single user Hansoft [^] is free, it's a kind of hybrid between MS Project and an agile / scrum planning tool.

OpenProj is a free OpenSource knock-off of MS Project. I've never used it, but I have seen plenty of people talk about it and demo it. http://openproj.org/ Hope that helps, Wauna

My two favorite are JIRA[^] and Basecamp[^] I have not used gant charts with either but JIRA is very effective in organizing development tasks and bug tracking. Basecamp is very simple and easy to use. Hope this helps.

Try RationalPlan. It is an alternative to MS Project at a reasonable price but still it is not free: http://www.rationalplan.com/[^]
