The Pope has been to Scotland today on a "state" visit and has annoyed me. Apparently atheism is something the Nazi's preached, ergo all Atheists are Nazi's: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-11332515[^] ... and if people listen to the atheists/agnostics we're pretty much doomed. Sorry, but I'm really not in the mood to take lessons from the institution that brought us such enlightened concepts as the crusades, the inquisition, witch burning and the covering up of child abuse. Wow... You know, I was pretty much in the "live and let live" camp until now... But after a speech like that... #@&* the pope. Normally I'd dress this up in some flowery language for my own personal amusement... But it's Friday morning, and a public figure has invoked Godwin's Law against me... So I say this in no uncertain terms to the 99% of you who can guess what the garbled word would be... #%)& the pope.

Proud to have finally moved to the A-Ark. Which one are you in?

I'm as athiest as the next guy ( ;) ), but I still admired John Paul II. His support for the Polish Solidarity movement, his plain-spoken humanity and what seemed, at least, to be an open, good soul... Contrast that to the ex Nazi youth who holds the office now. And this asshole has the nerve to call others 'nazis'? Well... he'd be the one to know, I suppose, given his own personal experience.

I'll agree with that, he even made a few steps of dragging the church forward, not that it got all that far, but still. Then the next guy they pick is was freaking Nazi, literally. I was a bit stumped after John Paul's good publicity that they went with him, but I thinking they did it just to turn every argument against him into an instant godwin.

Totally agree he also found a way to smooth out the redundant issues between the Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Churches. I’m not a believer but I respect the guy.

John Paul II was a pope, but more of a political leader than a religious one. He seemed to be all about getting along with other people instead of poking them with a stick.

I know, how can people take this guy seriously? If, for example, someone were to liken all Christians to Nazis I'm sure there would be uproar in the press. And the religionists moan about some atheists getting all 'shouty'. Maybe some are getting 'shouty' to try and redress the balance? All I can say is at least I don't believe in a thousand year old book written mainly to control the masses. I also don't need some old guy in a robe lecturing me about good principles and the belief in a 'god', when the paedophile priests scandal is still ongoing, or the fact that he views that condoms can increase the problem of HIV[^]. :|

According to Kirk Durston, National Director, New Scholars Society: The most realistic figure for the Spanish Inquisition puts the total killed from AD1480 to AD1808 at up to 31,912. Finally, records indicate that the number of "witches" killed may be over 30,000. Some argue that records don't tell everything and suggest that maybe even 100,000 were killed. These three events, totaling over 264,000 killed, are thought to be the largest atrocities perpetrated by one or another form of Christendom. Source: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100312111733AArVgvK[^] I remember this came up on QI some time ago, and their researchers are pretty good!

Thanks, I stand corrected. Is this includes only the Spanish Inquisition or also the victims in the rest of the Europe?

And your response is to imply that all Catholics are child abusers.

It's time for a new signature.

I take downvotes on the chin. I don't know whether you downvoted me or not, but at least you had the courage to challenge me.
